Protests Over George Floyd Death Overwhelm Authorities Again | Talking Points Memo

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Fires burned unchecked and thousands protesting the police killing of George Floyd ignored a curfew as unrest overwhelmed authorities for another night in Minneapolis, and the governor acknowledged Saturday that he didn’t have enough manpower to contain the chaos.

“I’m outraged,” he said of the Floyd case. “But I’m also sad. The injustice has been going on for so long. It’s been swelling for years.”

Anti racism activist Jane Elliot!!I love this woman… Must watch

Jane Elliot is the school teacher who originated the Blue-Eyes-Brown-Eyes exercise in her classroom after the assassination of Martin Luther King. The video is on youtube but this is the exercise she created:

I want every white person in this room who would be happy to be treated as this society, in general, treats our black citizens – if you, as a white person, would be happy to receive the same treatment as our black citizens do in this society, please stand. [auditorium is silent, stays seated] You didn’t understand the directions. If you white folks want to be treated the way blacks are in this society, stand.

Nobody’s standing here. That says very plainly that you know what’s happening, you know you don’t want it for you. I want to know why you’re so willing to accept it or to allow it to happen for others.

It’s a brilliant exercise that still is relevant today-even more so.

Even peaceful protesters said eff you to the curfew.

Speaking of eff you,

  • President Trump praised the Secret Service on Saturday, the morning after the White House was placed under lockdown as protesters clashed with officers outside. “They were not only totally professional, but very cool," Trump tweeted. No demonstrators breached the White House’s perimeter fencing; but if they had, Trump said Saturday, “they would have been greeted with the most vicious dogs, and most ominous weapons, I have ever seen. That’s when people would have been really badly hurt, at least.”

Two different protests outside of the racist WH. Finally, maybe practicing for bashing though the gates and dragging the POS out of the WH. It may come down to this. I hope he feels the heat.

It was exquisite.

And yet people don’t (want to (admit that they)) get it.

I hope he gets primly offended, as he has at times before, at the vulgarity, oh, how could she, won’t someone think of the children and so forth. It’s as grimly amusing as anything that’s happened since he got involved in politics.

Imagine Obama saying any of that.

I cannot even begin.

It’s getting clearer that the rioters/looters are a distinct group from actual protesters. Many of those who are rioting and looting appear to be white, perhaps antifa/anarchist types.

Please be wary of the intimation at the end of the article that strangulation is the only possible result of the assault that caused Mr. Floyd’s death. Pressure on the airway could cause multiple fatal conditions, such as hypoxia. Maybe consult with a medical source? If the idea that strangulation is the only possible way Mr. Floyd could have been murdered, it could taint the murder trial. The coroner’s report is odd and disquieting – why speculate about “possible intoxicants” before the test results return? – and should not be accepted wholeheartedly.

I doubt it. Trump is excited about the prospect of attacking the protestors "with the most vicious dogs, and most ominous weapons, I have seen. It’s a replay of:

but this time with deadly consequences.

I’ll leave the analysis to our resident shrink, Dr. @mattinpa.

The blustering here is unintentionally comical. Trump must be aware on some level that he’s despised by millions of people in a way that no other president has ever been, at least since WWII, but I don’t think he’s capable of reflecting upon it other than to conclude that those people just don’t count.

I cannot get over what a candy-assed poltroon this bully is. Nobody with a trace of physical courage talks this way.

Any shrinkology I have, most of us learned on the playground in our school years. At least I thought that was true. We learned to spot the inauthentic people, the bigmouths, the blustering cowards. I thought that. Maybe it’s only about 60 percent of us. Further study is indicated.

He sounds like a punk kid saying he’s going to get his big brother to beat up the protesters and then they’ll be sorry.

Good advice in general! – but certainly in the case of police shootings, where information is not what one might call freely available.

And welcome!

What is happening in America right now is like watching an overripe fruit fall off of a tree and explode when it hits the ground. I blame every single protest, pandemic death and loathsome police action on TRump and the Republicans for playing partisan politics with every horrible incident that comes their way. I am grieving for our country this weekend. All I can do is try to gaze into the future and somehow hope that the fever is finally breaking and something positive will emerge.

Mr. Trump, you are a most ominous weapon.

While the country was focused on the protests, 9 states recorded Corona Virus case loads exceeding 1000. CA had just under 3k cases in 1 day, a first I believe. Despite a slow reporting holiday week, we’ve still averaged over 20,000 cases and 1000 fatalities per day so far. We should expect a sustained level of cases and casualties after the activity of the past 7 days.

Can confirm.
Watching Mayor Fisher (Louisville) taking with police rep late last night, police were saying they had been monitoring social media the past several days and knew they were coming. For us, there are some white supremacist groups in and around Paoli, Indiana about 45 mins away north, and some klan groups once located in Trimble County have moved to Madison, Indiana, also about 45 minutes away to the east. And Gawd only knows what came up from Bullitt County just south of the city. I’m sure there are others, but I know for sure there are these groups in Indiana and Bullitt county. There are others in nearby counties as well.

Southern Poverty Law Center site has good maps of these groups.

MN Gov. just stated in his news conference that “international influence” is present in the protests.

Betcha Putin’s cyber army is at it, spreading rumors and inciting the violence through fake avatars claiming to be righteous protesters.
