I was just reading a book about Virginia Dare, the first baby born in America in N.C. in the 1500’s and the disappearance of this first group dropped in America. I was quite shocked to find out in the late 1800’s, early 1900’s groups of people started turning Virginia Dare, that probably never survived her infancy, into a cause celeb for whiteness, wanting everything to be pure now that they’d gotten rid of the Native Americans. Eventually all evolving into the KKK and Jim Crow. And, on it goes.
