Progressives See No Repudiation Of Trump In Nail-Biter Election | Talking Points Memo

Progressives hoping that the nation would be cleansed of President Trump and the GOP that enabled him in a mandate election Tuesday evening woke up to disappointment Wednesday morning.

IMO this shows the success of the GOP Long con to dumb down America. They have succeeded beyond my worst dreams. W was just the beginning… Should Trump win a second term, I think it is going to be difficult to recover.

Is it only “progressives” who see no repudiation of Trump? Or is it anyone & everyone with eyes, ears, or a sense of smell?

I think the cause for this chaos is simple. Both sides hate each other. Whether we last long enough for demographics to cure us is an open question.

The dumbing down of the republican party has been going on since at least W.

Wait! It’s been going on since at least Reagan!!

No wait!! It’s been going on since at least Nixon!!!. . . . . . . . . .

Yes, the reality is the US is much more of a trump nation than people would like to imagine.

I can’t help wondering if covid affected the election in the opposite way expected: more people wanted the mitigations over with, and were afraid of future lockdowns with Biden.

Been going on since Lincoln went to the theatre.

Since Nixon’s Checkers speech, that was 100% horse hockey and most Americans shoveled it down with glee. I could go back further to REPUG bull phucky over Social Security and to this day the minimum wage but September 1952, as a 7-year-old, was my introduction to just how stupid people generally are.

or that some invisible guard of Republicans were always waiting in the wings to come and help sweep him away in the name of democratic norms.

Hahahahaha.

I would say that we have always been like this. It is going to take a big two by four hit to cure us before the actuarial tables do. Even COVID wasn’t enough.

Interesting hypothesis.
Still, the results so far support my long-held conviction that Americans are too stupid (lazy, ignorant) for democracy.
Gods…McConnell and Graham in power; Doug Jones out… I just can’t…

I think you might be right about that. I’m just glad my dad got it and recovered last week. At least he’s safe for another 6 months or so.

If Covid+endless graft+treason+actively sabotaging your constituents couldn’t do it nothing will.

How can there be a repudiation when the alternative is a watered down version of the same. The Dems have been listing to disillusioned republicans cries to play to the center with half efforts that leave everyone wanting. Where is the party’s fight? A Barr impeachment was warranted, would have slowed the scotus nomination, and fired up the base to see the dems fighting for what is right - instead they pushed it back to the voters and the voters shrugged. How many times do we have to watch these apologists do just enough to gum up the system?

“There’s a spiritual sickness that has still not been cleansed from the veins of American democracy,” said Rev. William Barber II, a North Carolina pastor and progressive political activist, on Sunday.

This is a spiritual cancer, and cancer is not cured except by time and suffering.

Why would anyone vote for Biden - a corrupt child-molesting cannibal socialist hellbent on bringing black men into your bedroom? That’s why they voted for Trump.

Okay, maybe not all of the Trump voters believe in the QAnon lies, but a daily dose of distortions and misinformation from Fox (I think they have refrained from the cannibal claim) is enough to scare them with one of those threats. We laugh at their gullibility, and at the transparently bad con man they support, but their votes are not funny.

I understand that the government cannot do anything to infringe on Freedom of the Press, and that’s a good thing. But I believe we need to concentrate grass roots attention and some billionaire dollars on responding to, debunking, and defeating rightwing media.

I live in Manhattan where the election tally so far shows Trump will once again get a tiny percentage. But my FIOS cable service gives me five or six 24/7 right-wing cable networks spewing lies and anger and hatred every day. Besides the hate, there are abundant moments of misinformation. A doctor on Fox last week was confidently prescribing Flonase as a therapeutic “cure” for Covid. It might be possible it helps – I’m not close-minded - but that’s not how first world countries practice public health.

We have to expose and defeat Fox, and Facebook, and talk radio in a seriously combative manner if we are ever going to have a well informed public.

If you’re in the top 5% of intelligence, 95% of the population is dumber than you. Apparently, the percentage of Americans with empathy is pretty small, too. And we keep making the mistake of thinking the rest of us will gain that empathy through tragedy or experience. Nope.

There aren’t enough Republican Party members to account for this. The dumbing down is of the rest of voters that continue to support Republican rule that ultimately hurts them. How does this continue to happen?!?

Word.

One might argue that anyone with at least three of the five senses functioning should be progressive, but I know it isn’t so.
