Progressive MO Activist Defeats Establishment Dem Rep. Lacy Clay In Upset Victory

Ferguson Black Lives Matter activist Cori Bush unseated 10-term Rep. Lacy Clay (D-MO) in Missouri’s elections on Tuesday, marking yet another progressive upset victory against an establishment Democrat in the 2020 primaries.

This is an indication of what could be a very sad November for Republicans. Congrats to Bush. She will be the first black woman repping Missouri.

I’m assuming that given that Clay has held the seat for 20 years, it’s considered a fairly safe Dem seat.

In which case, a big welcome to the new congressperson for Missouri Cori Bush.

As a Missourian, I celebrate the vote on the expansion of Medicaid. However, the R legislature has a history of disregarding voter preferences.

I was wondering about that. In Oklahoma, we voted to reform penalties on some crimes, and a bill was filed to negate it on the grounds that we didn’t know what we were doing. (Details are fuzzy–it’s hard to keep track of the outrages.) Keep up the fight to force them to honor the vote of the people.

Biden should not underestimate the % of his voters that swing hard left/progressive/activist, as evidenced by this primary and others in the last few months. As much as I believe looping in the black/brown vote would serve him extremely well, part of me thinks picking Warren might be a net positive as compared to Harris, Bass, Demmings, Duckworth or Abrams.

Last night I read that every Medicaid Expansion ballot initiative has succeeded.

As a woman of color, the general vibe I get is that Warren brings a small slice to the table and that she is a no go. Choosing her would depress a good amount of the Dem base that is POC.

As a white guy in the Commonwealth I would prefer she remain in the Senate at least until after November. Vibe sensors temporarily offline.

Demmings and Harris both have a strong “Law and Order” vein in their CV, and I think have generated some suspicion among many black and brown voters. Bass is dealing with her Castro and Scientology BS. Abrams is whip smart but has scant national presence, nor a history of successful campaigning at the national level. Of all the VP leaders I see Trump having real trouble going after Duckworth, a double amputee woman of color that’s a decorated veteran, mother and possessed of a large following. Biden’s choice will be very critical, and fascinating to dissect when he makes it.

Beyond safe. Like 80-20. It’s St. Louis.

That has been the pattern, certainly.
I believe that’s why this was structured as a (state) constitutional amendment - much harder for them to ignore.

But I’m sure they’ll come up with something ‘creative’…they always do.

I will never forget (or forgive) what they did to the puppy-mill ban and the election reform laws!
Doing their best to screw up the medical marijuana referendum as well - and that was also structured as an Amendment.

TOUCHE !

Why don’t you have them for her while she gets on with the business of governing and serving as she always does?

Yes I can’t wait to see what for what Haahr and Schatz come up with.

It’s a hyper-safe safe. Basically, when the GOP gerrymandered St Louis a decade ago, Clay was delighted to go along with it (against the wishes of local D party) even though it meant Dems losing a district–because it made his seat utterly bulletproof.

Lacy Clay is a poster boy for why we need–and are getting–a renewal of our Congressional ranks. He inherited MO1 from his family and has run it like a corrupt family business. Bush outspent him because Clay had pocketed most of his campaign money (in the form of ‘spending’ it on legal and consultancy services provided to him by his family). There are all sorts of nasty stories about Clay. RIP, I say.

Cori Bush put her body on the line during the Ferguson protests. She is a brave, honest, smart, and very determined to do stuff. This is great news. The do-nothing caucus is being overhauled.

Next up: Alex Morse v lethargic and corrupt RepNeal.

I guess it’s time for Lacy Clay to move over.

And why would that be? Nancy is the most practical person in the House…as well as the one that actually KNOWS how to govern.
