Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, on Wednesday called out Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) for falsely suggesting during a hearing the day before that a grand, left-wing conspiracy was behind the deadly Capitol insurrection.
Portman specializes in low-key fascist: all tone, no mercy.
And Johnson is still the stupidest senator.
ETA: To be clear, Portman is a revanchist reactionary and supported Trump all the way both in the Senate and publicly (see below). The only difference between him and Johnson is Portman: (a) isn’t stupid and (b) is not willing to work in the minority because he would rather do evil than say it.
“…dubbed “The Loyal Soldier” in a front-page profile story in his hometown Cincinnati Enquirer, Portman usually supported Trump in carefully worded statements. After Trump called the presidential election rigged, Portman said Trump had a right to a probe of any irregularities.” – Canadian Press [emphasis mine]
“So when you stick to the policies and the ideals of the party — including some of the issues regarding the economy, which was going quite well prior to COVID-19 — and kind of get back to the basics, I think that’s where we ought to be as a party,” Portman said. “It shouldn’t be about personality, it shouldn’t be about one individual. It should be about who we stand for as a party.”
Yeah, um, that ship sailed a LONG time ago and it was “boarded” with the anointment of “Saint Ronny”
Portman has an op-ed in WaPo wondering where Biden’s bipartisanship has gone. It’s been what 30+ days, a pandemic, a failed vaccine program, a fucking winter storm (I’m still waiting for my pipes to thaw and it 60 degrees yesterday ), a Capitol building that still bears the scars of a riot that Portman’s fellow Republican help instigate, and…and…just shut up Portman.
