Portland mayor Ted Wheeler hit back at President Trump’s assertion that his administration is “trying to help” the city by deploying federal law enforcement officials in light of ongoing protests, during an interview on CNN Sunday morning.

“People are being literally scooped off the street into unmarked vans, rental cars, apparently. They are being denied probable cause. And they are denied due process,” Wheeler said. “They don’t even know who’s pulling them into the vans. The people aren’t identifying themselves. And, as far as I can see, this is completely unconstitutional.”

It’s my understanding, which if wrong I would appreciate being corrected, that the ostensible authority for this comes from his stupid executive order about federal property and monuments, the one he was screaming TEN YEARS about five times a day for a while there. But that won’t be enough to offset the rights this outrage tramples all over. Other regimes have created a pretense of legality and had the power to back it up. Trump doesn’t. This won’t survive contact with the legal system, is my thought, like so many other efforts he’s made to live out his authoritarian fantasies.
See, Trump and his goons though Portland would be so easy; a pushover. Incite a riot, maybe a false flag bit here and there, arrest some people, photo-ops for Chaaahd. But what they got was augmented protestations including being faced down by squads of “moms” chanting “leave” at them, an ex-navy guy staring them down and taking their worst before double flipping them off and at least one naked lady staring them down. And these images are spreading around the country and world. This is Trump’s America.
Now, instead of cutting his losses, Trump will now double down. There’ll be more blood on the streets if the courts don’t stop them.
I’ve often said that the Nazi label has often been overused and exaggerated, but with this administration I’ve had to revise my thinking.
