Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo slammed Republican lawmakers on Wednesday for stalling the Violence Against Women Act and gun control measures after one of his officers, Sgt. Chris Brewster, was fatally shot while responding to a domestic violence call.
âI donât want to hear about how much they care about lives and the sanctity of lives yet, we all know in law enforcement that one of the biggest reasons that the Senate and Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn and Ted Cruz and others are not getting into a room and having a conference committee with the House and getting the Violence Against Womenâs Act [passed] is because the NRA doesnât like the fact that we want to take firearms out of the hands of boyfriends that abuse their girlfriends.â
Great summary, Chief. He is in a unique position to explain the ramifications of the NRAâs hold on the GOP. I hope his comments cost Cornyn votes in 2020.
I saw the video the other day. Brought a tear to my eye. If we have half the compassion of this police chief, Trump and his coconspirators will be history.
Unfortunately being on the wrong side of history seems to be a badge of honor among conservatives, probably because they simply donât care, their only objective is to win the argument today, doesnât matter what the impact is tomorrow or what they said yesterday.
Hopefully voters are hearing Mr. Acevedo speak even if Cruz and Cornyn are ignoring him.
Question 1: How much did females victims of domestic violence contributed to Cruzâs and Corneyâs campaign?
Question 2: Do they really expect the GOP Senators to take sides against the organizations that did contribute to their campaign?
Jokes aside, I appreciate what Art Acevedo is doing, but he should step back and look at the role of the Police forces both as organizations and individuals in the gun proliferation mess that we are having now. From the Sheriffs that oppose any kind of gun legislation to the extreme ammosexuals that infest the police forces, they are a major contributors and supporters of pro-gun organizations and politicians.
This story was just re-counted on my social media:
At the hair salon and the ladies were discussing a story about a guy that asked for a womanâs number. The woman told him she wasnât interested and when he continued to pursue, the woman responded, âBoy, bye!â The guy shot her.
So one of ladies in the shop said chuckling, âThatâs why I be like, â555âŚââ All the ladies giggled. One replied, âBut now they call you right there, so thatâs dangerous too.â
No one realized how sick it is that women have to devise strategies not to be shot for rejecting a man.
A woman does not owe you her number, her time, a greeting, a glance or any other courtesy. She can completely ignore our advances if she wants. She can reply rudely if she wants. She can give you a fake number. She can throw shade. She can laugh at you. None of that is reason to or justification for assaulting her.
The sooner men learn that a womanâs body and person is not here for the sole purpose of menâs pleasure and conquest, the better. Stop teaching women to suck up their feelings and reject men graciously, and start teaching men to accept rejection maturely.
âItâs unfortunate the chief of police in Houston seems more focused on trying to advance his own political ambitions than on supporting the brave men and women of HPD,â Cruz said in a statement to CNN.
This right here is what makes me crazy. We canât talk about gun prevention because:
itâs too soon
itâs too close to a holiday
itâs politicizing the victimâs death
And why is it unAmerican to be able to go to the movie theater, shopping at a mall, go to school, go to church, go to a concert, go any fucking place without having to check where the exits are, always be in high alert, or carry a fire arm at all? The NRA and Republicans (and yes some Democratic legislators) have allowed this country to become a covert war zone.
When a right becomes a burden/threat on the majority of the population weâve lost our moral compass.
In response to Acevedoâs assertion that efforts to curb gun violence was not political, Republican senators accused the policeman of politicizing Brewsterâs death.
