This information is yet another compelling reason why the House needs to create a commission or committee to investigate what happened (all Republicans abdicated their fundamental job to protect this Nation), who knew what, when did they know it, what did they do and not do, and if ignorant of the facts as they were unfolding, why they still have a job.

The generals didn’t want to be seen as participating in a coup? A coup against whom Congress or Trump? My guess is they very badly wanted to do Trump’s bidding and staying away from the Capitol. would give Trump’s mob a chance to hang Pence and Pelosi. Once maximal damage had been imposed the guard would have shown up to deal with Trump’s mob in such a way to allow Trump to declare martial law and stay in office. That was probably Trump’s plan and why he installed Miller at DOD.
Pence forced the issue with Miller and he had to act or he would have been seen as a participant on Trump’s behalf.

Optics? The optics of even a few hundred National Guard soldiers around the Capitol Building would have stopped the mob in their tracks. But that was certainly not what had been set up that day. What the mob saw was a too few defenders to stop them; a de facto invitation.

This piece demands a correction. The open letter from former secdefs did not “demand that the military stay uninvolved.” Rather, the letter noted that the military is bound by oath to “facilitate the entry into office of the incoming administration”. It demanded that they “refrain from any political actions that undermine the results of the election or hinder the success of the new team.”
There is a world of difference. It did not say stand back and stand by while militias and a mob overwhelm the capital.

The notes repeat what other reporting has suggested: that Pence told Miller to “clear the Capitol,” a directive that has raised questions about whether Pence stepped outside the chain of command.
Actually, there is no chain of command if one link is missing, as he was on 1/6.

In addition to the direct conspiracy parts, this is a sign of how structurally corrupt and useless the pentagon was under trump. This what what you have contingency plans and various levels of wargaming exercise for. So you don’t spend hours blathering at one another, you just decide which plan(s) to execute with which options. We have bleeping plans to invade canada, surely there are plans regarding insurrection.
