Pence Deflects On Trump Tweets | Talking Points Memo

Vice President Mike Pence repeatedly dodged questions concerning President Trump’s recent tweets calling on governors to “LIBERATE” protesters defying stay-at-home orders, during Sunday morning interviews.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1304757

Because it would have been too difficult to simply ask: “Mr. Pence, please answer my question. Let me state it again for you. Why is Trump encouraging people to defy his own stay at home order? Mr. Pence, why won’t you answer my question? Again, why is Trump encouraging people to defy his own order that is intended for national safety?” Repeat until answered.

“Pence Deflects When Pressed On Trump’s ‘LIBERATE’ Tweets…”

Pence has a lot of experience…um…“deflecting”.

Mike Pence was born Dense, he has achieved even greater Denseness, and now, in a wrinkle that could only happen in 2020, he is having great Denseness thrust upon him. Calling Trump’s incitements to insurrection attempts to “safely and responsibly” open the country, Pence has achieved levels of bad faith denialism heretofore thought impossible by experts.

Nobody knew Mikey had it in him. Then Trump came along…

Pence was also on the PBS News Hour Friday (after rescheduling from Thursday), and frankly I think Judy Woodruff whiffed it mightily. She let him drone on and on and didn’t press him to answer her questions. No real follow-up. No hard questions about “how do you reopen the country without testing millions of Americans?” When she asked him about getting to the bottom of it, he pivoted to “yes, we’ll find out why the WHO was so bad.” Really? I thought PBS was better than that. Maybe Yamish Alcindor would have been better.

For a guy who tries to be a savvy traveler in normie-land, as opposed to a nutcase like Trump, he’s as brazen as Cruz. You could ask him about the bag of money and gun he was seen holding on tape during the bank holdup, the money and gun later found in his house, and he’d shake his head and mouth “no” in that pained smile that sorrows over the depths of human folly. And he’d say, “Chuck, when I’ve traveled the length and breadth of this magnificent land and talked to our hardworking, decent, upright citizens, I don’t hear questions about what people are holding. I hear questions about what we’re doing to help them achieve their dreams, and I’m glad to tell them that at the president’s wise and steadfast direction we’ve been doing more than has even been done before to blah blah blah blah…” and so forth. Utt-er-ly brazen. Just stop thinking some gotcha question or frowny face or other stratagem will trip him up. You can’t do it. They can have these freaks on their shows, or they can have nobody from the administration and none of its surrogates either. It’s a binary choice and they live by interviews, so there you are.

It’s still a game to the MSM. The wealthy and near-wealthy can still shelter in their homes and avoid the unwashed masses. It’s only when their maids, and chefs, and pilots, and doctors start to bring the disease into their own homes that they will turn on Trump. Honestly, without massive testing, this Trump pandemic is going to kill hundreds of thousands of Americans over the next two years. There are probably already over 60,000 dead which will be shown when we get the final number of increased deaths over the year before. For the life of me, I can not figure out why Democrats are afraid to call it like it is.

Slightly off topic, but I tried to upload “LIBERATE MIKE PENCE!” as a comment.

The damn troll in the software kept telling me: “Body seems unclear, is it a complete sentence?”, and then blocked my attempt at a comment. Yes folks, TPM performs grammatical censorship. First they came for my dangling participle, and I didn’t protest ……

Are you saying that Chiselin’ Trump completes Pence?

He is a real master of NOT actually answering substantive questions. I laughed when Trump congratulated him on not answering a ‘real’ question by talking for 5m, not answering, then saying, Enough on that, NEXT.

From another thread (what Pence should be afraid of)

["Ever notice that the fine lawyers on this site (and we have some World Class ones) are more silent than around the first of the year (or, for that matter, before Bill Barr appeared on the scene)?

That’s because, now that Barr, McConnell and Roberts have established that the Rule of Law is heavily skewed Trump’s Way, there is less to offer. Even from lions like Laurence Tribe (who had argued for Impeachment).

Which means that the only things we have include US **, Nancy Pelosi…

And the Fourth Estate, which we still take for granted, given that too many people have not lived for a protracted period of time under a regime with NONE.

** Which includes a fine team of Joe Biden and a very carefully chosen running mate"]

The bug is it doesn’t like all caps. Include some lowercase or a non-printing character like a close paragraph from markup language. That’d be a < / p > with the spaces removed.

He has his script, and, by golly, he’s sticking with it regardless of the question.

The fact is there is no defense for Trump’s mutinous tweets, so Pence didn’t even try. His best quality is looking pious (or constipated, ymmv) while giving a nonanswer answer. I don’t think he’s competent at much else.

I hope he was pushed hard on the testing question by either Wallace or Todd at some point during their respective interviews. It wasn’t asked in the two short snippets provided.
