House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) issued a statement Sunday after Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA) announced her resignation amid allegations of inappropriate relationships with staffers.
Having multiple sexual partners or going through a divorce were hardly what mattered and the nude pics were just a distraction. What brought her down was her affairs with staffers. Had she kept her personal and professional lives separate, this wouldn’t have gone anywhere.
Oh, but it would’ve… Democrats, and even more so - women are held to a much higher standard than Republicans. Hill’s biggest mistake was involvement with a staff member - that would almost get a Republican reprimanded.
Trump: More proof that Democrats are very very immoral. They do not shy away from immoral affairs. I am sure they all have prostitutes in their life. Some of them even paid money to keep it quiet. SAD!!
I can’t condone members carrying on affairs with staffers. It makes for a toxic work environment and smacks of exploitation. Ms. Hill made a mockery of our system, but it’s ultimately for people in the district to sort.
While I don’t disagree with the rule to keep things simple, life’s messy, plenty of people have gotten into relationships in the workplace, and each relationship is unique.
Not going to judge other’s personal choices, if they’re good with it, who cares. Adults have the right to make choices. Not all of them will be “right”.
What does bother me is that the ex-husband leaks nude photos and allegations to smear her, and the reaction isn’t to go after him for that horrid shit, but rather to do the good Puritan thing, stick a Scarlet Letter on her and shove her out the door.
It’s pretty obvious who the victim is
I really wish she had said … I don’t think so, I’m staying
None of your goddamn business and I didn’t pay anybody to keep quiet
Dems fold too easy . Trump will do something today or tomorrow to make this tabloid shit yesterday’s news and a * in the big picture
We are backwards. But Congresspeople should know that and recognize that at least in some cases it opens them up to act in a manner, in their official roles, that otherwise they would not due to the fact they’ve invited a blackmailer to influence their legislative actions. Katie Hill might not be much of a risk. But what if the head of the Armed Services committee was pushing a bill very hard, only because the backer had photos of him in bed with one of his aides? What if the Speaker of the House was hiding an illicit affair, truly fearful it would end their marriage along with tumbling them from their lofty perch, and in an effort to keep it hidden fed some nemesis intelligence materials?
Sure, the U.S. is fricking weird about consensual relationships, especially ones where a marriage of one or both parties is present, but it still, regretfully, needs addressed until we change.
Based on the evidence confirmed so far, Hill doesn’t have to resign. The relationship with the campaign staff falls into the grey area of the House rules, and there’s no proof of the affair with the Congressional staff yet. Even if that’s true, a censure or something like that will suffice. That said, it’s reported that Hill has talked to Pelosi and Hoyer, so I think the decision was cautiously made and is the best for her and her district.
Hill is one of my favorite freshmen and it was clear she had a bright future in politics. I’ve read in LA Times that Pelosi was grooming her (in a positive way). Hope she keeps up her fight in the future.
