Pelosi Directs House Judiciary Dems To Proceed With Articles Of Impeachment

And this is the guy who is going to still be without a straitjacket by the time we roll around to next fall.

We quail and wail and shriek when the GOP Circles the Wagons. We always do. And that’s OK. I do it every morning. But I usually pick myself up and don’t try to pass it off as something to offer to others who I respect and admire dearly on this site.

Hmmmm…where are all the commenters who said that impeachment was wrong because the Senate won’t convict?

There is also a good bit of impeachment fatigue out there. We believe, here on TPM and on other progressive and left-leaning websites, that the evidence is overwhelming and should lead to the desired outcome, but there are an awful lot of other sites out there that feel just the opposite - that the case hasn’t been proven beyond any doubt and the whole process is more than just suspect.

There are far too many who just can’t or won’t deal with this anymore, preferring to just ignore the whole operation.

He will do as he did the last time: immediately act out to abuse his power again in order to rig the election…and we will have to hope against all hope that he’s caught at it again.

But it only matters if there is a conviction… we must sell to R’s. And I really am tired of all R’s are corrupt etc. if we don’t convince some to go our way (in Congress and most importantly in general public) we have failed. Doesn’t matter that it is tough - that is our job and so far it appears we are failing. If we continue our current projectory it appears we will not win the presidency or the senate. Then we are stuck with 4 years of total disaster and total change of what the USA is. I believe T Roosevelt said to Oliver Wendell Holmes, “Truth is not power.” I believe he went on to say something to the extent of truth is just truth, power brings results. We need to apply real power, ceasing control of the messaging and brig real emotional response from the population at large. I fear for our future, for my grandchildren’s future!

I’m of mixed thoughts on this, but I keep thinking that he will more than likely cough up some other impeachable offense unrelated to Russia or Ukraine.

So… we do it again. Risks are higher, certainly, the RW would explode. So it would have to be something quite strong with demonstrable proof. But I have full confidence in Trump! And then he could be the first prez to be impeached twice.

Well, it’s not quite up to ‘A date which will live in infamy’, but it’s pretty good.

No need to rush this through. I think next summer looks like a great time for a more thorough impeachment investigation, sort of like the GOP with Benghazi.

unless and until the House does everything in its power to present a case to the Senate that will result in Trump being gone from the White House, there is no point in sending articles of impeachment to the Senate. ETA [at this time].

That is why I recommend passing articles of impeachment, but not sending them to the Senate immediately. Given how badly the House has botched its legal strategy — treating its own subpoenas as if they are disposable, and then complaining when they get ignored by Trump’s people – passing articles provides one last chance to get the courts to act with dispatch, by arguing that the House needs the testimony of people like Mulvaney, Bolton, etc…and all the documents, to fulfill its constitutional function when sending articles to the Senate, and the public interest demands that the Courts act with the utmost urgency.

But I don’t expect that to happen. The House is clearly happy with a delay strategy. The DC Circuit Court has scheduled a hearing on Jan 3 to hear arguments on whether to even hear the case – instead of the House filing a motion to use that date to argue the merits of the case on an expedited basis, they’re happy to have the McGahn case drag out indefinitely They could also file to leadfrog the appeals court, and go directly to the Supremes – and they haven’t done that either. (i mean, this is just a hearing to decide whether to hear the case… how much slower can you get?).

With utter disdain for the Constitution and the rule of law and ethics, Trump and his GOP co-conspirators in the Senate will simply shrug off this entire thing, declare that POTUS did nothing wrong, then proceed to blame Democrats for everything, including the betrayal and crucifixion of Christ. Trump will be exonerated by a corrupt GOP Senate, then will use the failed attempt to remove him as a campaign ad. If our democracy isn’t officially dead, it’s certainly in a coma.

That’s the million dollar question. Would slowing the process help by allowing more damning evidence to be made public, slowly shifting public opinion and preventing quick Senate acquittal? Or would it look like the case was insufficient and Dems were playing a political game to hurt the president?

Some of both, I suspect, but at this point I’d like to see it play out a bit, trusting the Dems to manage the optics. There is a lot we don’t yet know about the extent of his corruption, which would be included in the ideal impeachment case. They can always complete the impeachment whenever they want, if opinion begins to turn against them.

Say whatever else you want to about Nancy Pelosi, but beyond a shadow of a doubt, she knows how to count votes.

Was not a question of how much more evidence @lestat or I want but whether more evidence could garner more support for impeachment and removal.

[Not sure where this is coming from, hence no comment.]

Republicans never said this during Clinton’s impeachment and look what happened.

If people are so worried about their grandkids’ futures, a massive protest on the National Mall might be helpful. Otherwise, everyone here is like the bored girls at the restaurant staring at their phones that another commenter mentioned.
