House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) spoke briefly about her morning meeting with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) Friday, calling the freshman congreswoman “gracious” and comparing their disagreements to “differences” within a “family.”
This is how this stuff should be handled. I want to personally thank Donald J. Trump for uttering in public one of the most racist statements ever uttered by a public official in US history over the last 40 years or so. It snapped the Dems into alignment.
The Quinnipiac poll [correction: FOX poll] showing Trump underwater on immigration and massively underwater on the question of whether his comments crossed a line also probably made it easier for Pelosi to make peace. The Squad is helping to reframe the election around things that make Trump unpopular. That makes life easier for moderates. I know Pelosi is protective of her ‘majority makers’ but she also ought to be telling them how the risks the Squad are willing to take actually helps them.
If this was Paul RAyn talking to his Freedumb Caucus about anything difficult or contentious, the media would never report on RAyn in the way they have Speaker Pelosi and these four women. I’m starting to see so much misogyny in how these women are often portrayed and seemingly pitted against each other in the press, when I seriously find so much of it overblown and based on a lot of ridiculous stereotypes over how women work together to solve problems. Yes they disagree on some things. Its how its characterized that tends to bother me most of the time. They aren’t always in competition with each other. Sometimes collaboration takes time to achieve. It also takes more effort and more work, which is how women often go about solving problems. Disagreeing with one another isn’t a sign of disrespect like its often being pushed in the media.
