Panel Rejects Alabama Legislature’s Faux ‘Remedial’ Map - TPM – Talking Points Memo

A federal panel of judges smacked down the Alabama legislature’s bad faith attempt to redraw its congressional map Tuesday, giving the job to a special master.

“We are deeply troubled that the State enacted a map that the State readily admits does not provide the remedy we said federal law requires,”

Oh no! They are deeply troubled! I assume the hand-wringing is starting to chafe at this point. The court will get the map it requested, which is good, but it sure would be nice if there were consequences for simply ignoring the original order.

I think the real message from Alabama is “What do you mean, Appomattox Court House?”

Republicans ignoring lost elections and lost court cases is becoming routine.

By law all congressional maps should be drawn by non partisan demographers. End of conversation. Period.

“Indeed, the State has explained that its position is that notwithstanding our order and the Supreme Court’s affirmance, the Legislature was not required to include an additional opportunity district in the 2023 Plan.”

Translated from Redstatese to English:

Go f*ck yourself. We’re going to ignore any decisions we don’t like and there is nothing the Biden Administration can do about it.

We shall see…

The consequence, from the point of view of the Alabama legislature, is that there will be more Black representation. Doesn’t get much worse than that.

You are absolutely right. This was just the Alabama white racist way of telling the Federal panel to draw their own damn map. The Alabama legislature was just giving Alabama blacks and the Supreme Court the bird.

The Republican party will abolish democracy in this nation, and soon, unless they are stopped by force. They will not ever cooperate, they will not ever “learn their lesson,” they will never stop being anti-democratic proto-fascist wannabes. If we just swat them away from their monkeywrenching, they will immediately resume their nefarious plotting. They must be permanently, physically restrained.

Well the actions of the Alabama legislature certainly proves Florida Governor DeSantis right: There is no discrimination against Black folks. Bigotry ended with the conclusion of the War Between the States. Right?

Doing some quick math, 5.0 million Alabama voters, 25% black, yields 1.25 million black votes.
7 districts with roughly 715,000 per.
Magic number of 360,000 to win. I see 3 solid black majority districts pretty easily attained, perhaps 4 Dem.with a bit of creativity.
Shorter District Court…“Here, try this on for size. How do you like Me now?”

The question is, did they cause enough delay to get a “too close to election’s, we’ll let the racism go another cycle” type ruling?

I hope the panel draws a map w/ 3 opportunity districts.

Nope. Next election is 14 months away.

One judge is a Clinton appointee,
The other two are Trump appointees.

Donnie has to be super pissed at this.
