It’s a simple fact that this constant threat of LEO brutality has an overarching effect on the health of our African American fellow citizens.
It’s murder every bit as much as if Derek Chauvin had his neck on ALL African Americans.

Wonder what this kind of study regarding Palestinian’s health would yield if done in Gaza or the West Bank?
I’m not sure that a rise in STDs can be blamed on the police department though. That one has me scratching my head because when having sex, police most likely are the furthest thing from your mind.

I wonder if it would change things if an effort was made to have the racial makeup of the police departments reflect the racial makeup of the community they’re policing?

And speaking of police killings, perhaps Daunte Wright’s family will be sharing any settlement they receive from the city of Brooklyn Center. Seems he MAY have shot another black youth in the head who will never be the same again:

Google and ye shall find!

Life expectancy in the occupied territories is ten years less than Israel and infant mortality is four times higher.

Anyway if we’re talking a little OT about Israel we need to, as a courtesy, inform @economides because he likes to show up and do his soft pedal trolling on behalf of Israel and doesn’t comment on anything otherwise.

Just a wild guess**, here, but I could believe that once one’s been (literally and figuratively) beaten down enough, one might understandably be less careful about one’s (or others’) personal safety.

**(I’d only briefly skimmed the article at first. Sure enough, on a closer read…)

…perhaps, the authors suggest, because the associated psychological stress leads to riskier sexual behavior. Fear of a police run-in and distrust of institutions might also lead people in these areas to avoid medical services… (emphasis added)

I think this point is an interesting one, since it seems that being policed by LEOs who look like the community they’re serving would encourage more acceptance and understanding in both directions.

However, I also think we’re learning enough–esp. over the past year or several–that what’s really going to matter is the philosophy of the police department toward policing in general and toward the particular (vulnerable and/or (potentially) marginalized) community(ies, whether racial, ethnic, LGBTQ+*, immigrant, impoverished, etc., including intersectionality and overlaps between/among them) specifically.

IOW (and IMO), if the police leadership is rooted in and embraces a philosophy of the white-, christianist-, and whatever else-supremacist “warrior”, occupying enemy territory, then the average black kid on the street getting a ‘nightstick shampoo’ for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, probably won’t care that much if it’s being delivered by a white, black, brown, yellow, red, or green cop’s hand.

Making sure PDs reflect the communities they serve is indeed a useful tactic, but I think making sure they protect and serve the entire community and not just some favored segments of it is even more important.

From my experience living in Israel, not good in the best of times. Recent bombing of Gaza has made it even worse.

Read this article. I subscribe but this is open to non subscribers.

Which is where their argument falls apart.

Correlation is not causation, one of the basic rules.

Since it requires testing to find STDs, an increase in cases indicates that more, not fewer, people are seeing doctors and getting tested.

Good point. In my own opinion I think for both African Americans and Palestinians it is the caustic cortisol from constant emotional distress that is the big killer and overall health hazard.

OT: Genocide In Canada

“The Kamloops school operated between 1890 and 1969 and was once the largest in Canada’s residential school system, with as many as 500 students registered at its peak. The federal government took over the facility’s operation from the Catholic Church and ran it as a day school until it closed in 1978.“

An Indigenous perspective. Alethea is a well known Inuit activist and documentary maker in Canada.

I read that before I commented. I’m still not sold on their reading of the tea leaves regarding every aspect of their report. Most of it, I have no problem with. I’m still on the fence as far as that conclusion regarding STDs.

It’s also problematic to isolate one event and extrapolate from that to blame all negative outcomes in a community on that.

There were 81 homicides in Minneapolis last year. The other day, during a live broadcast from the Floyd memorial, someone shot at least a couple dozen rounds off literally around the corner.

Saying that all of society’s problems are directly linked to over-policing is a real reach.

Not just police killings but idiots with guns. And Gaetz says it’s all OK cuz second amendment…

It makes me think that humans are deranged animals with no sense at all. Just cruelty, malice and evil intent. Whoever did this should turn themselves in for their just reward.

A big increase from the 48 homicides in 2019. So far, 2021 homicide rates are double of 2020. So I’m not imagining that homicides are still elevated.
