Davenport is much like a serial killer. She has been organized and methodical in setting up a system that allows her to continually punish Black children for being Black.
I’m glad to see that this story seems to be growing legs. She belongs in jail, or maybe a psych ward.
Not that I disagree, but it should be noted that it is a Church with a black congregation. I am waiting to hear the condemnations from a Pastor with a white flock…not that I am holding my breath, that would be bad for the collections plate.
She didn’t do this alone. She couldn’t have done this alone. There were so many places along the chain where one person with integrity could have put a stop to this long ago. The fact that said person never materialized says everything we need to know. This is a blatant display of the systemic racism that Republicans say doesn’t exist. I guarantee you, if this was happening in one county, similar things are happening elsewhere.
I keep thinking about those young girls and the trauma they must have suffered and are still suffering from the events of that time. I hope they have been able to get some help. How horrible to experience first-hand that white people are ignorant, racist assholes and the treatment they received from these clowns had nothing to do with their behavior, but rather with the color of their skin.
I’m hoping for justice to show up in a lovely karmic episode that sends this ugly woman reeling.
I have no doubt it is happening elsewhere. And yes, more than Davenport is involved. The teachers and principals who refused to stand their ground on behalf of the children they supposedly valued are also to blame. Perhaps it is mostly about fear, but that is not enough of an exoneration. Of anyone.
These outraged people didn’t say a word until the press got hold of the story. They liked the money Davenport’s system was generating. They didn’t really want to look too closely at how she was generating it.
“Once conform, once do what other people do because they do it, and a lethargy steals over all the finer nerves and faculties of the soul. She becomes all outer show and inward emptiness; dull, callous, and indifferent.” ― Virginia Woolf
While this response is a start, it isn’t far removed from “I’m shocked, shocked to find out there’s gambling going on here.” People knew what was going on but as long as things stayed quiet, what’s the big deal.
Rutherford County has a sad history of racism, including Klan activity.
And I’m glad they quoted Gloria Johnson----I’ve known her for years, and she is a champion for children and schools (she’s a former teacher) who doesn’t suffer fools gladly.
I’m so disgusted and sickened by how much trauma this woman inflicted on hundreds of children - because it was “her process”. I hope the publicity leads to her departure and a total overhaul.
