One GOP Guv. Expresses Confidence Trump Won’t Be 2024 Nominee

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) said on Sunday that former President Donald Trump “is not going to be the nominee” for the Republican Party in 2024.

The best punishment for tRump, other than prison, would be permanent irrelevance.

“He’s not going to be the nominee. That’s just not going to happen,” Sununu said

Easy prediction. I’ve been saying that for nearly two years. He’ll do some performative running for the sake of the fundraising, but that’s it.

“I have long said that I care more about ensuring a future for the Republican Party than securing my own future in the Republican Party. That is why I will not be seeking the Republican nomination for president,” Hogan said in a statement.

The usual reason is that the money said “No”. Or “Nyet”.

Noble thoughts from these 2 governors, but I agree with Josh that Mr. Trump is still the favorite to win the nomination. The 2 quoted governors seem sane, but they are so far removed from the mainstream of the GOP that we have to take what they say with a grain of salt. In terms of his running or not, as far as I can see, Mr. Trump has every reason to run. Being a candidate feeds his ego, is a way to raise cash, and also serves (in his mind at least…) as a shield against prosecution.

I’ve seen nothing that fits with the scenario of Trump not being the nominee.
Is there anything in his history that shows he might walk away? Maybe if he’s led away in cuffs, but otherwise what’s stopping him?

I do not believe that Trump will be liked like he thinks he will

Shorter Sununu:

The party wants a sane nominee, and that should be me.

Everyone in the world:

Sununu is insane if he thinks Republicans want anyone ever accused of being reasonable.

Not as liked as he used to be, but the question is how much of the MAGA cult will vote for him in the primary? If he can hold on to that 25% of GOP voters and the field is big enough, he can win with a plurality like he did in the 2016 primary.

He has to hope enough of them hold on to the end though. If everyone bails out and it’s just Trump and DeSantis or another “forward looking” candidate, he might be in trouble. The MAGA base might wake up and realize that Biden already beat Trump once and he’d do it again.

This guy, Sununu, seems to be a fixture on the Sunday shows lately as some kind of sensible moderate Republican. When he opens his mouth his words are riddled with lies and nobody calls him on it. He’s a product of nepotism whose dad was a right wing extremist before it was as in fashion as it is now. The apple doesn’t usually fall far from the tree.

Maybe, but it’s a cult. Trump feeds their lizard brain, and DeSantis is too straight up predictable organized fascist, who hurts all the right people but doesn’t give them the thrill.

That’s true, DeSantis says all the right things but he has negative charisma. He doesn’t know how to work a crowd like Trump.

Yeah, and I never thought he’d be elected in 2016. I’m going to wait and see.

I wonder, does Chris Sununu know any Republicans?

Again, Donald Trump did not create his base but rather the base of the Republican Party created Donald Trump.

I do not think it matters much if Trump is the Repug nominee or not as whoever it is and especially if it is someone like DeSantis or Sununu, will still be as terrible as Trump.

In fact the only reason Republicans do not want Trump to be the nominee is they do not think he can win. Otherwise, they would be all for him. Rather, they think someone else who can get the nomination by following Trump’s playbook of being the most outrageous that he gets all the media attention and gains a cult following from deplorables. In fact but for the insurrection and all that it entailed, in my view George W Bush worse than Donald Trump.

So I a much more worried about someone who the media builds up for not being Trump but is other in just as bad or worse than Trump.

Or to put another way, Trump is a symptom but not the disease and the rot in the Republican Party runs far deeper and longer than Trump.

That’s his shtick. He’s used it repeatedly to dodge the question “Will you support the nominee if it’s Trump?” His stock answer after being pressed repeatedly is “Look, I’m a Republican. Anyone would be better than Joe Biden.”

That is spot on. With Trump’s pathological vanity, irrelevance would be uniquely appropriate, painful, and fully deserved.
