Oklahoma Gives Criminal Immunity To Drivers Who ‘Unintentionally’ Run Over Protesters

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) signed state Republicans’ bill on Wednesday evening that will protect drivers who run over protesters from criminal and civil liability.

So this means we can run down any old protester we disagree with? That’s gonna work out well.

Why didn’t they include a points system? So many points for “unintentionally” hitting a POC, so many for a wheelchair, so many for school crossing guards, etc.

And if they don’t “unintentionally” kill them the first time, do they have to back up and “unintentionally” hit them again?

Okie minds want to know.

Under the new law, a driver who “unintentionally” causes injury or death while “fleeing from a riot […] under a reasonable belief that fleeing was necessary to protect the motor vehicle operator from serious injury or death” will not be criminally or civilly liable for that injury or death as long as the driver was exercising “due care at the time.”

What are they calling this law? The Absurdly Specific Law of Specificity in Light of Specific Circumstances?

Next up: It’s legal to cross your fingers while eating an ice cream cone on Thursdays and kind of shooting protesters if you don’t like the flavor?

Well now if this isn’t a solution in search of a problem. If you don’t like something about who’s in power and how they exercise it feel free to die.

Bit confused… So does this mean protesters can stand their ground and shoot any drivers that they perceive to be a threat?

Wouldn’t want to have a conflict with 2A rights in these bills.

Gee, why don’t they just call it the “Kill the Protesting Liberals and the N*** Act”? At least that would be an honest name.

The courts will have fun with this one.

Hmm a motor vehicle operator that is sitting in a vehicle that weighs from 5,000-12,000 pounds is in fear from a 190 lb man?

Well until these stupid laws are overturned by the courts may I suggest all protests get a parade permit? In some places the city requires a permit for a protest, so…how does that factor into liability?

This. Is. Fucking. Absurd.

IANAL and I haven’t read this law, but wouldn’t accidentally hurting/killing someone under threat of personal harm be considered a defense against assault/murder charges just about anywhere? Is this anything more than performative revanchism porn?

Any law that states it is ok to run over someone is not a law. I dont see how it can stand. Certainly sets up the State for one hell of a law suit.

“We are sending a message today in Oklahoma”

Just not the one they think they’re sending.

Not primarily, anyway.

So “I didn’t intend to” is the Get Out Of Jail Free Card?

This could have unintended consequences. Someone’s (non-POC)** kid could be hurt and the driver will be in a seriously catastrophic situation.

**maybe of well-to-do parents
