The US Office of Special Counsel said in a letter Wednesday that President Donald Trump could deliver his Republican National Convention speech from the White House.
“It would be by far the least expensive from the country’s standpoint because it really is, it’s a big deal when you get up and move all of this apparatus,” Trump said at the time.
Should be good optics when they have to clear a 20 block radius around the White House so that no one can see or hear the protesters when he’s blathering on.
The President and VP are explicitly excluded from the Hatch Act. Every other executive branch employee is included. Everyone who so much as opens a door for the people putting this on needs to be prosecuted.
What’s the point of having a speed limit if Chevrolets are exempt? I understand exceptions in a law if its strict enforcement might bind legal activity but that’s not the case here. The idea is to keep politics off the public’s dime. If that has merit it has merit for all.
He really should give the acceptance speech at one of his golf courses. He could charge admission fees to attendees and build up his legal defense fund.
I am sure the Squealer Office of Special Counsel will insist that a rule against giving campaign speeches at the White House was never discussed or passed.
And Benadick Donnie’s speech will have copious pronouncements of “4 legs good, 2 legs bad”.
Hamrick added that there were some caveats since White House employees were implicated in the Hatch Act, writing, “there may be Hatch Act implications for those employees, depending on their level of involvement with the event and their position in the White House.”
May be Hatch Act implications?
How about every federal employee – including every secret service agent – who plays a role in the presentation of the speech is in violation of the Hatch Act. Trump can give the speech in the White House – but NO ONE can be cleared by federal employees to attend the speech without violating the Hatch Act. No media, no family members, nobody.
I said this the first time that the idea was floated – the legitimate media should refuse to provide any live coverage of the speech because to do so would aid and abet the commission of illegal activities. This would also go for any event that takes place on federal property in conjunction with political activity.
ETA: I’ll go further – from now on, any time there is coverage of a white house event and Trump mentions anything having to do with politics, legitimate media cameras should cut away from any live coverage – and any taped coverage should be proceded with a statement that Trump’s actions are entirely unethical.
