Painting the current President as a failure and a cynic, former President Barack Obama on Wednesday urged Americans to vote in November rather than sitting out of electoral politics.
Pres. Obama took a sure-footed moral position no one could mistake and a rhetorical tone unlike any I’ve ever heard from a member of that most exclusive of clubs, the ex-presidents.
Let’s not be smug or content and remember his message every day.
Patricia and Mark McCloskey, the couple who wielded guns at Black Lives Matter protesters in St. Louis, will have convention speaking roles, according to multiple reports. In June, video was captured of the McCloskeys pointing guns at protesters outside of their home, yelling at them to get off their property. Demonstrators were walking on a private street to gather and protest outside of the St. Louis mayor’s residence. The couple was separately charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon but Trump, the Missouri governor and the state’s attorney general all argued that the charges should be dropped.
Other speakers include Nick Sandmann, the fromer Covington Catholic High School student whose interaction with a Native American elder in Washington was captured on video that went viral; Andrew Pollack, the father of a Parkland school shooting victim; and anti-abortion activist Abby Johnson, who previously worked at a Planned Parenthood, according to Fox News.
It was a lament for the possible loss of all we love, coupled with a reminder that we have a charge to keep. The broad sweep of American history that BHO commands is nothing short of breathtaking, and to hear the the undertones of lament in his voice nearly broke my heart. Come November, I hope America rises up and gives this great American’s country back to him, and to all of us who love and are loved by him.
Nobody—not Obama, and not anyone else—will ever deliver a greater, more profound speech than Charleston. That would not be possible. But this could be his most consequential, and in these times, that’s saying a great deal. I hope that whatever gods may be will give his voice even greater power and bring our way of life through this crisis intact and ready to improve and flourish. You should hope that too.
