NYT: Weisselberg Could Face Charges As Soon As This Summer In Criminal Probe | Talking Points Memo

The Manhattan district attorney’s office may be in the final stages of a criminal tax investigation into the Trump Organization’s longtime chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, and there’s a chance he could face charges this summer, according to the New York Times.

And one can bet that, while T**** sweats, swears and rants behind the scenes, he won’t do a single thing to protect his employee that’s protected him for decades.

I hope this serves as a warning to the rest of them - they’re on their own now. Turn evidence and at least make it worth the while.

I’d rather it read “WILL face charges” but I’ll take what I can get.

Unless the IRS was deprived of a great deal of money in unpaid taxes is Weisselberg really at risk of stiff prison time were he to negotiate a plea agreement and plead guilty. One that didn’t involve rolling on Trump? It’s not as if the unreported income and benefits came by way of running a drug or prostitution ring. It was money from his employer.
Every speculation on this implies he’s screwed, he must flip on Trump, and if he doesn’t it’s gonna be 25 years in the electric chair. Very hyperbolic. What if he says eff you, I’ll do my 5 years and be happy with that?

FINALLY face charges by as LATE as this summer.

Reads better, IMHO.

My preference is “has been charged” but I guess we have to wait a bit yet.

Followed, of course, by either “plea deal” or “has been sentenced”…. Both would be even better.

I feel like if Trump got a parking ticket, it would require an 18 month investigation and ultimately it would be dropped. He’s above the law.

I keep waiting for an indictment. It’s been 6 months now. I hope I don’t wait forever.

Doesn’t sound as though the leverage is working to get him to flip on Trump. I agree that if these benefits are all they’ve got, it doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of risk. On the other hand, if he was responsible for tax reporting and withholding for employees and employee benefits, his troubles may amount to more than unpaid taxes on his own benefits.

Don’t forget that they’ve got his son in the crosshairs, too. This is the same tactic used by the feds to get Flynn to plead.

I suspect his hands have been in everything with money attached. W probably set up the structures for money laundering, tax avoidance, up-costing housing maintenance costs (which old Fred used to transfer money to the kids tax-free), managing the inauguration monies, and much, much more.

If they find charges against him that would rattle him to the core, totally ruin his self image, public image, and shock the sensibilities of his congregation…something to make him into a real pariah - I wonder if that would persuade him to provide evidence on the criminal in charge of his “organization?” As the court has ORDERED him to do…

I dunno. Based on the article it sounds pretty weak to me. Tax avoidance on grandchildren’s private school tuition? Since when is that a grandparent’s responsibility anyway?

This sounds like a fine and probation at worst…

Nothing short of the frog-march in leg irons and hand cuffs will do, for the whole lot of them.

It’s possible the degree of criminality for his son is even less than that of Weisselberg himself, no? Just how much damned trouble can he be in, failing to report modest amounts of income over many years? Many people are caught hiding or underreporting income and therefore failing to pay the taxes due on it, yet don’t rot in jail, if they go to jail at all. You catch up what’s due, plus fines and interest. If you’re otherwise law abiding maybe community service.

As promising as this sounds, the American People have seen this happen before, and, to be honest, for most of the Trump Administration, Trump had the positional advantage.

That has changed. Objectively.

The fact that Trump learned the following from Roy Cohn does not negate the trouble he is now in:

Trump will talk and act the same whether he is six months from ruin , six weeks, or six days.

It’s getting better all the time.
