It will be worse than that, I fear. Republicans don’t believe in facts, distrust experts, and are willfully ignorant. Democrats also no longer trust the government because it’s been hijacked by a monster who is increasingly effective at manipulating federal agencies. States, localities, and the general public continue to rely on the CDC. Can they be relied upon for absolute transparency at this point? I’m not sure. So where does that leave us? How do we stage a coherent, consistent national response without reliable data, medical guidance, and a national strategy to handle this?

It’s a federal offense if you commit a crime crossing state borders. Which is exactly what a virus does, and you can’t build a stupid wall to stop it. And it’s all well and good to have competent governance on the state level, but it isn’t enough. We desperately need a federal government that’s engaged, responsive, science-based, and quick on its feet. We have none and will have none of that until next January, at earliest.

It will take longer because people from those areas don’t travel much or go to big public gatherings but if it is as contagious as it seems to be, it is just a matter of time before it arrives there. A high percentage of the residents are elderly and living in assisted living and nursing homes, where one exposure could infect everyone. My mother lives in an assisted living facility in a rural area and I am not sure what I would or could do if it hit there. I am keeping my fingers crossed. The next year will probably see this country going through some major changes and a lot of them are going to be forced by circumstances.
