The union representing police sergeants in New York City tweeted an internal arrest report for the mayor’s daughter on Sunday, after she was arrested at a protest against police brutality.
And just to make sure her life will be put in danger, the union also released her personal information. Twas just another FU to de Blasio and everyone else.
Cue the cries of “it’s just a few bad apples”. When the Sergents’ Union decides to oust the leadership that approved this, that barrel will have fewer bad apples. Until then, it looks as if they agree with the action.
The SBA endorsed Trump, threatened to revolt if cash bail reforms enacted by the NY Senate were not revoked (they were revoked), and basically don’t hide the fact that they believe that the job of New Yorkers is to serve and protect the NYPD, which itself is a extremist rightwing gangster organization with a $6 billion budget, paid for by New Yorkers. De Blasio, a weakling, is terrified of them. So that’s another big item on the repair-the-USA ticket: bring these rogue armed organizations to heel.
Oh fuck these insecure snowflake crybabies. NY’s Finest my ass. Most cops I’ve met struck me as none too bright and very provincial. They see the public as the enemy and are mostly interested in protecting each other from it, and from having to do any more work than absolutely necessary. Even now they don’t wear masks as they congregate (which they love to do, as an excuse to not do their jobs), and I very rarely see them pull anyone over for relatively minor but potentially deadly traffic violations like failure to signal a turn or completely stop at a stop sign, stopping on top of a crosswalk, running reds, etc. So spare me the petulant whining. Do your fucking jobs or else get another one.
When Trump arrived in Cape Canaveral, though, he seemed to want a campaign ad, not a moment of American reconciliation, and soon after he walked onto the rooftop, the song “Macho Man,” by the Village People, a staple of his campaign rallies, began blaring from the speakers. The spectacle of a florid disco tribute to the President at such a time could not have been more discordant, or the message clearer: it’s all about Trump. It always is.
They still can’t forgive him and get over his saying some mildly critical things about them a few years back and not kissing their vastly overpaid asses. I’m not saying that being a cop is easy or safe, but pulling 6 figures for mostly enforcing traffic violations and noise complaints is ridiculous. The days of Fort Apache are long gone and most cops serve in very safe precincts where petty theft is usually the worst crime. Perhaps they realize this and are projecting their own self-doubts.
I understand your sentiment, and agree with where you are coming from.
But police ARE civilian. They are NOT the military.
The fact that people, and they themselves think of them in those terms is a big, big, big part of the problem.
What we are seeing playing out is a deep violation of one of the most basic social contracts our society has. Namely, that we as a society allow certain powers to the police in order to keep all of society safer. The police are now trying to turn that on its head, and assert that since they have those powers, THEY can threaten society unless they be allowed to do whatever they want, without answering to any other power than their own.
Exactly the thing that’s been troubling me this whole time.
First Amendment gives the Freedom of Assembly.
All week, we just see cops deciding to declare unlawful assemblies either because of no reason but that they decided to (like in NYC), or by creating curfews that were bullshit (Santa Monica, 4PM).
So literally they’re above the constitution, and get to decide when they’re allowed to start shooting, gassing and beating peaceful protesters who have done nothing except to decline to follow an unconstitutional “order” to disperse.
