NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City police officer who was caught on video violently shoving a woman to the ground during a protest over the death of George Floyd was charged Tuesday with assault and other counts, prosecutors announced.
Prediction: The cop will receive a hero’s welcome from a large crowd of NYPD in the near future, and he will be back on duty within a year with full back pay.
This is what Trump means by dominating the streets -kill, injure maim law abiding peaceful protestors. The first amendment only applies to his rallies, Evangelical Christians, OANN and Fox. The rest of us are just s.o.l.
Cops who do this should be tossed out, there is no space for attacking people at a protest who are just protesting, yelling, whatever. If someone actually attacks officers, sure, they get to fight back, but only enough to control the situation and arrest the person being violent. Just shoving someone who is yelling at them or making them uncomfortable, there’s just no excuse.
Really, policing has become far more violent than it should be, and that’s due to police being trained to dominate and their fear that any moment someone may attack them. We need police, but we don’t need these police who think their job is enforcing the law…we need community servants who look to keep everyone safe with minimal intervention when necessary to protect people’s lives or property. It’s not going to be an easy transition to change policing, and police and other government officials that continue to allow bad behavior will do everything they can to block any changes, but we still need to fix the system going forward.
At this point, police unions around the country will try to ban people from carrying cameras of any kind at large gatherings - they’re just too incriminating. And, good luck tying to collect cell phones at a large demonstration(!).
Seriously, it is one thing to support your members, but to do so when directly contradicted by video evidence, sometimes from several different sources, really just destroys your credibility.
The head of D’Andraia’s union, the Police Benevolent Association, said the mayor and police leaders were “sacrificing cops to save their own skin” by sending officers out to protests with “no support and no clear plan.”
Yet de Blasio said the cops were showing restraint and he hadn’t seen any violence on the part of the police.
No matter what their instructions were, a decent person doesn’t just strike a person as they walk by and continue on. Bummer for him that this was on camera, although his defense might argue that because it was so widely broadcast he won’t be able to get a fair trial. That’s one of the problems with committing a. crime in full view of everybody.

“They should be the ones facing this mob-rule justice,” union president Pat Lynch said in a statement. “We will say it again: New York City police officers have been abandoned by our leadership. We are utterly alone in our efforts to protect our city.”
I am so glad that John Oliver’s entire show on Police last Sunday specifically featured a long clip of fucking Pat Lynch, asshole supreme, reacting to any attempt to impose accountability on the fucking PBA Membership with yet another hysterical crying episode accompanied by a threat to NYC to urge City Cops to “go a step slower.” Fuck Pat Lynch and fuck the NYC PBA and all the rest of the PBAs.
