Um, macroeconomists have questions about that inflation number, as well as the failure to mention that it’s American firms and households who pay the tariffs. Perhaps the biggest irony, however, was just the situation. Brexit has been the biggest economic policy cock-up in Europe this century, crushing many parts of the British economy. Starmer looked almost relieved that Trump’s tariff legacy is guaranteed to do even bigger self-harm to the US economy.

Isn’t fixing all the bad stuff they put in their last bill just letting Rs get away with giving the rich their tax cuts without people seeing the impact, while accelerating the deficit which Rs will just weaponize later?
I know we should feel compassionate, but I feel like Rs just factor it in and go even harder with their proposals. Maybe we should just win an election first?

The experience outside the US media bubble is quite different from how it feels inside. In Europe, the news is usually something shocking that the Americans have now done. In China, it’s thanks for ceding us new opportunities, like middle-class travel everywhere but the US and a zero-tariff policy to help commodity exporting countries, particularly poorer nations such as the 33 countries in Africa with diplomatic relations with China. In the US, there is this eerie calm. People rarely talk openly about politics and the vibe is kind of like East Germany in the 1980s, when one party dominated. East Germans eventually learned to protest and push back, however, and good-bye Erich Honecker in 1989. I’m confident Americans will find their voice, but it may still be a while.

Today, only about half in the GOP see the nation on the right course, down from 70% in June. The shift is even more glaring among Republican women and the party’s under-45 crowd.
Overall, about one-quarter of Americans say things in the country are headed in the right direction, down from about 4 in 10 in June. Democrats and independents didn’t shift meaningfully.
