A top official at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reportedly sent out a memo to the agency’s employees last week telling them not to contradict President Donald Trump’s incorrect claim that Hurricane Dorian was going to hit Alabama.
An unnamed official told the Post that there was “no political motivation” in the NOAA’s decision to release the statement and that the agency merely “needed to make sure forecast products reflect probabilistic guidance.”
“If I kiss butt hard enough, I’ll probably keep my job.”
I do not believe most people realize how horrifying this is.
Trump has gotten his tentacles into people’s careers. ***
The irreverent observations about presidents and senators and congressmen which came from Federal employees I was around for all of my entire life were as natural as breathing.
On the other hand, government employees of the Latin American countries I have lived in for a good part of my life DO tend to have very tenuous types of employment. High government officials in Latin America DO tend to personalize their government.
This IS Banana Republic territory, and every minute Trump is allowed to do what he is doing here is a minute lost in trying to stop him.
*** Here is the rub. When I say “Trump has gotten his tentacles into people’s careers”, what I am referring to is especially the time element: The time elapsed between the time Trump moves against an employee and the time that the legal system (which Trump can manipulate) can provide protection would be judged as too great to provide real job security. In addition, government employment becomes Trump Employment
It’s all silly to me. We are placing our fight against a dictator in the hands of ritualists, nearly all of whom get up, eat breakfast, kiss the spouse so long and then go to work for social organizations so massively money-grubbing/antisocial as to defy description. Most of the combatants of this farcial “American Civil War” could not even sit down and rationally explain why they hate, why they fight, why they fear.
Here is the answer: $$$$$$$ They are making a living
From your experience in Italy, I am confident that the Italians have faced greater dangers as a society in any given 20 year period than any person has been exposed to here in the U.S.
Based on almost three years of empirical observation, the probabilistic interpretation of anything unusual around Trump is that it results from something massively stupid and/or corrupt being covered up.
Message from Team Trump to all federal employees:
Do not let verifiable evidence or scientific analysis undermine your absolute loyalty to the Supreme Leader – his is the final word in all matters.
Growing up in a town within driving distance to Washington, DC, I was always around various federal government employees from Pentagon staff to security detail and Park Service folks (they were the most fun and interesting to me). I never EVER got the feeling any of them were ass kissers. I could usually determine for myself which party they preferred personally – but they were professionals to the end. I find this current maladministration scary on all points. Yes, we really are in Banana Republic territory. How far we end up is the question.
you can’t crap on career staff like this and expect nothing to leak out, but I guess NOAA bosses don’t care; they just deliver the message they were ordered to deliver.
