I can tell you what happened, instead of telling the GOP newcomers to shut up and listen to the adults, they let them run roughshod over the House. It was a complete failure of leadership.
In our household, that chair would be severely aerated, shredded a bit and heading out for pick up. Our cats have a thing about vinyl or similar.
Meanwhile, everyone is trying to find order and make sense of chaos. Chaos just laughs and does its thing.
Best to wait, let things settle and then let the blood pressure go up.
The good thing is, there are cameras in the House showing what people like Gaetz look like while they are speaking. One wonders whether their constituents are watching, or are they just going with Fox, Newsmax, and Bannon’s take on things? Sadly, it seems to be the latter.
Salient questions they should be asking themselves include: would you trust your children with this guy? Your children’s future? Seriously?
Seems that not having a speaker and essentially shutting down the house gives the fascist cult everything they want. Government shutdown, excessive pain and cruelty inflicted on the country, the continued support of multiple propaganda outlets including the corporate media’s willingness to hold democrats responsible for the evils committed by republicans. What’s not to like from the republican point of view?
Our best hope does seem to be if a few of the house r’s display some integrity and decide to put country over cult and work with, gasp, Democrats to keep our government functional. So, not looking at all good.
Is there anybody in the TPM community who’s represented by an R that could possibly buck the cult and behave as if the good of the nation actually means something to them? It would be encouraging to learn there are a couple out there.
Ho-ho…har-har…tee-hee…it is to laugh!
Even if those folks did exist, the maths still don’t work. The next Klown Kar Kaptain Speaker of the House needs 218 votes to be elected and he can only afford to lose 5 GOP votes, assuming all D’s vote against them. As we’ve seen, there are more than 5 members of the Freedumb Cockup willing to set fire to the country if they don’t get their pony.
A crisis of some sort leads people to change in order to adapt to it. The good people who are remaining silent are going to get more than they bargained for, I’m afraid. The clowns truly are fomenting violence as a component of sewing distrust in our institutions.
I think a lot of people keep thinking this or that might be the crack where we can finally see the bottom. I don’t think so. It’s going to get much much worse before it starts to get better. I think it may be a while for that too. Some of us may not live long enough to see the day where things actually take a turn for the better. I’m generally quite optimistic. I just don’t see any signs or reason to be here.

My belief:
The few are trying to control, take over, our Country from the many.
These Putin people know they have Putin’s favorite Trump backing them with threats of violence and the backing of many wealthy families.
Their stupidity and lack of caring showed when they removed McCarthy not having a replacement in mind.
Gym Jordan, Speaker?
Yes. It can get worse.
It can always get worse.
Recent events have likely hurt Elise Stefanik’s efforts to become Speaker. Scalise is too sick for her smooth transition to the number 2 spot and the fight over control of Kevin’s money has not been resolved. She lacks the chops to stop the ineluctable slide to shutdown and wider economic harms.
Politico has a very different take on Scalise-Jordan. As if Scalise were not facing a serious health hurdle. Thoughts?
The alarm bells on the health of our democracy may be ringing loudly, but, as we’ve seen, many Repubs—both elected and laypeople—don’t care. To the contrary, this is their plan.
“Super damaging. No end in sight. It may seem like they’re mostly hurting themselves. They’re not.”
The American people installed this House through the ballot. The people want a shitshow. Everyone is analyzing and bemoaning the state of the House. Seems to me it’s the electorate that everyone should ponder as to WTF is wrong? People put Gaetz and Boebert and MTG and Jordan in office. They wanted them in the House. They got what they wanted.
True, but gerrymandering helped.
Correct!
AND … this is a key point that exposes the total Bullshit narrative of blaming the Democrats … turn the clock back 5 days ago - as this internal civil war was about to go down - there were zero Republicans saying
“gee I hope the Democrats bail us out and vote to retain McCarthy”
Nope - the Republicans were busy fighting amongst themselves - and putting on macho displays of conservative purity & bashing Democrats at every opportunity - because they viewed any concession / or even courtesy across the aisle would weaken their internal position. The McCarthy camp arrogantly calculated that they would weather the storm - they went through various stages of denial … all the while insisting “fuck the Democrats - we will pull through this without them” … plus there was bitterness at having already gotten over the shutdown by having to have Democrats.
It was not until McCarthy crashed & then capitulated that the “Oh let’s blame it on the Democrats for not running into the burning building to save Kevin … while McCarthy shouted he didn’t need them and called they names.” got to be a part of their whining.
Prior to the last second of McCarthy’s speakership… no Republicans even whispered “should we work out a deal with the Democrats?”
Actually, Gerry Mander put those klowns in office. If you had straight honest districting in play in all states then you woudn’t see these crazy fucks elected.
Every nation gets the government it deserves.
