Nikki Haley had appeared to pick up on the reality of abortion politics that Democrats have been harnessing to win elections since the Dobbs ruling on the campaign trail thus far. She’s maintained a semblance of rhetorical neutrality on abortion since the first Republican primary debate when she argued a national ban on abortion likely would not have the votes to overcome the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster and that Republicans must be realistic about finding “consensus” on the issue if they hoped to run a winning campaign.
The federal judge overseeing Donald Trump’s indictment for allegedly illegally retaining classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida has denied a request from the former president’s attorneys to file a consolidated brief laying out all of his pretrial motions in one time-saving maneuver and instead, has ordered him to file them one-by-one and with rules on page limits for each.
Aileen again needs to step in to prevent Trump lawyers to fuck up the delay…
And that’s the line she’s been toeing — being “unapologetically pro-life” while maintaining she does not “judge anyone for being pro-choice” — throughout much of her time
The last time we heard these kind of mealy-mouthed non-assurances of upholding established freedoms of abortion rights were from Coney Barrett and Kavenaugh.
This didn’t work out well for the electorate.
She said “to me, embryos are babies.” Supporters of draconian abortion laws will focus on the “are babies,” while people who want to believe she is reasonable will focus on the “to me” and pair it with her previous statements on compromise. It lets people project their opinions on her and whatever happens, she can safely say, “I’ve made my opinions known on this issue” because she is taking multiple sides.
As we all know, here are the ways to cut the need for abortion:
MANDATORY age-appropriate sex education. No opt-outs for “religious beliefs”. NOT ABSTINENCE ONLY. Most American schools require four years of English. Sex Ed should be the same requirement.
FREE birth control.
More than six weeks of UNPAID family leave. Make it six months with a guaranteed spot for daycare.
It’s unclear why the 2024 candidate would pivot to such an extreme-appearing position ahead of her home state primaries
It’s clear to me…Trump hasn’t commented on this yet and this will be popular with the evangelical crowd. It won’t win her the nomination, but it might grab a vote or two.
There are ongoing maintenance costs to keep the embryos frozen, so it would seem that yes, at least in Alabama, they would be dependents.
Of course more worms from the can to come: Who gets the “kids” in a divorce? Will “child support” be required? If there’s a massive power outage from a natural disaster, who gets charged with “manslaughter”? When the mother can no longer safely carry the “child,” what then? Child abandonment? And, of course, having a miscarriage will probably be charged as involuntary manslaughter as well.
Embryos are babies. Pine cones are pine trees. Little tiny mustard seeds are actually big flowery mustard plants. Lost elections are stolen elections. Walls not built are big beautiful walls. Property zoned for a private club is actually zoned for multiple private residences. Safe and live-saving vaccines are actually deadly instruments of mass murder. Made-up disinformation from Russian intelligence services meant to fake evidence of a crime is actually evidence of a crime. Trying to bribe the president of Ukraine to smear your political opponent is actually your political opponent trying to bribe the president of Ukraine. Bloodthirsty white nationalist extremists are actually Godly Christians.
Yes, it’s theocracy, but to be more precise, it’s theocrazy. Theo-f***in’ crazy.
I know many very well informed folks on this board are convinced that banning hormonal birth control pills is a bridge too far for the far right, but if I understand it correctly, the Alabama decision takes us about half-way across that bridge. If an unimplanted fertilized egg in a test tube is a person, then one of the mechanisms of action of birth control pills is to induce an abortion by preventing the implanting of an otherwise viable fertilized egg. Blessed Be The Fruit.
Not all embryos implant in the uterine wall. Is the mother a murderer? Do we take “personhood” back to the ovum or sperm cell? Is every ovulation or ejaculation a murder? In the case of the male it could be genocide.
I have a problem with deliberate stupidity and that is exactly what the Alabama court is into in my opinion. It puts it’s “reasoning” in a middle eastern stone age manuscript translated (poorly) by a European church priest.
The natural failure of implantation has been estimated at anywhere from 10% to 40%…
