I’m not sure how they look now, but didn’t HS textbooks come very near to saying that until the 1980’s? In the supposedly oh so liberal Seattle area we still had references to “states rights” as one of the causes in the late 1970’s.
I think it tells you all you need to know about Nikki and the GOP base. She really can’t step outside that noble/lost cause framing. If she does all her opponents will accuse her of being woke. From a nomination standpoint or 2nd billing positioning she played it right.

Jack Smith is doing EXACTLY the right thing to continue to meet the existing filing deadlines. The stay only means nothing can happen that burdens trump. trump doesn’t have to respond, and the court can’t rule on it. But Team Jack is meeting its obligations in the meantime. When trump loses in the appellate court, he won’t be able to argue new deadlines for filing Team Jack’s shit, because it’s already on file.

Doesn’t matter: in the unlikely event that Haley is on the ticket (as either POTUS or VPOTUS candidate) that footage of her will be in every Biden attack ad.
It also doesn’t matter if MSM covers the Biden reply as widely, because–I say again–the MSM is already on her.
This is a complete face-plant on her part and it’s going to continue to cost her. How’s she gonna defend it in the (unlikely) event that she winds up in a debate? She can’t.

Biden is going to have to incorporate just a bit more racism, misogyny and xenophobia in his campaign if he expects to succeed with the current electorate. He has the opportunity for this vis-a-vis the Ukraine aid extortion by Congress, more money for Ukraine in exchange for increased border hysteria on his part. I say he bites.

Haley isn’t stupid. What Haley, DeSantis and other Republican candidates are doing are meeting the people. Donnie is yelling at the people. Donnie is not doing town halls. Donnie is afraid of the people.
I do think Nikki should have been prepared for that question, she was in the North.

The book I recommend to everyone on the Civil War is James MacPherson’s Battle Cry of Freedom. It’s first ten chapters relate in detail the political developments between the end of the Mexican War and the outbreak of the Civil War.
The narrative makes abundantly clear that the proximate cause of the war was the future status of slavery. Specifically, whether all of the new territories coming into the Union would be slave or free, since this would determine the balance of power in Congress. Also, Southerners feared that their slave “property” would be confiscated if they travelled with their servants to the free states.

This is only a couple of years behind the sweet spot. This was needed 2 years ago. We are a political party. We don’t need ‘proof’. We don’t need to convince all 12 members of a jury, we don’t have to survive appeals, and we don’t have to let rich and powerful people escape culpability and guilt. We had the goods…much of it on tape in some form.
As a national party and D state parties, we totally failed to use the actions of elected R officials against them. They participated in attempts to nullify whole state’s ballots, and attempted to obstruct congress in the constitutional transfer of power. Insurrection and a coup. Some were even conspirators in the planning.
When you wait for the courts, and keep your ‘powder dry’ as far as messaging and politicking…you get the result we have now. People on the Right who didn’t want to say the words J6 or bring it up at all before the '22 election - have become steadily more emboldened and like Kellyanne Conway - are ridiculing us.
So, great. Let’s see if you really hold their feet to the fire this time. Should have been doing it all along, since Jan '21…and running Senators up the pole for ankle-grabbing during two impeachments to boot.

Not really, just not in the way they want to portray their “noble cause.” It is very easy to argue the war was about states rights, several northern states were asking why they had to enforce the fugitive slave laws, some firebrand abolitionists seem to have argued that they should be able to use “nullification”. So the Southern states were fighting over states rights, just not for states rights.

That’s why the shooting war started with Southern aggression. Because aggression begets aggression, the North did indeed become aggressive; ergo “The War of Northern Aggression” fits.

Better prepared? She was born in the U.S. and is aged 51. She graduated Clemson. Both her parents have doctorates. There are 12 year old kids that would have provided a more cogent response. If she lacked the knowledge and insight to answer that question sans additional “preparation” she may be suffering the onset of dementia.
