Newly Right-Wing N. Carolina Supreme Court Reverses Its 2022 Gerrymandering Decision

The North Carolina Supreme Court became much more conservative after the 2022 midterms. On Friday, the newly minted justices flexed that power to overturn the court’s own months-old decision knocking down maps that were egregiously gerrymandered by the Republican state legislature.

Time to change the NY constitution. Gerrymander to Zero republican seats.

Same in California.

I know you mean NC – but your point is taken.

Conservatives flex and use their power just because they can. Liberals not so much.

No, I meant NY… it’s blue, we should take it all, Like they’ve done in so many red states.

For the anti-American GOP and “conservative”, power trumps the concept of democracy.

The North Carolina Supreme Court … overturn[ed] the court’s own months-old decision knocking down maps that were egregiously gerrymandered by the Republican state legislature.

C’mon, it’s stare decisis: since the end of Reconstruction, North Carolina has, except during a brief period of unwanted federal interference, sought to prejudice its elections’ outcome. The court is simply upholding that precedent.

I believe @jonney_5 was referring to the fact that the NY State Supreme Court struck down the Democratic-gerrymander maps the NY Democrats pushed through in the run-up to the 2022 elections (which was not even close to as egregious as many of the “red state” gerrymandering moves) and those maps being struck down ended up costing us several seats in the NY Congressional delegation and lost us the House.

Ah, yes. Context is important. Thanks!

The North Carolina Supreme Court justices were elected to carry out the Republican Party’s agenda and pursuit of power. That was the reason they ran for the office. This was the job the justices were assigned to take care of. And they delivered. The Democrats can overturn this decision when they are in the majority in the Supreme Court.

That and Hochul Is awful.

NY Dems need to really think hard about who they vote for for LT Governor, that person inevitably becomes Governor.

I have mixed feelings on this and the blow-and-go industry generally.

We need to make a federal anti gerrymander law. With full preclearance requirements, State and local.

Then expand the House to ~650.

Nate Silver can start a new Site… 703.c om. haha

There were election years that we shot ourselves in the foot. 2010, 2014 and 2016 come to mind. All were perfectly within our power to get out and vote.

The Right should always be looked at as a constant menace to try to grab, amass and retain power.

Is it possible to revisit the decisions on the VRA?

The Democrats simply haven’t gone to the mat any time the right/GOP has stepped way out of bounds, at least nothing major that comes to memory. It has cost both them and the nation. More than that, it has only encouraged the right to step even more out of bounds next time around. We’re seeing it again with the debt ceiling. This moving the red line is not behavior that has been in any way limited to Trump alone.

I am hopeful with the nascent youth movement in politics (the two Justins, etc). But they have to get going quickly.

May need to VRA to be reaffirmed first

the decision is nakedly political.

Thanks to the Federalist Society, our judicial system is now a political system.
