WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has delayed New Zealand’s elections by four weeks due to the coronavirus outbreak in Auckland.

She said she had called the leaders of all the political parties represented in the parliament to get their views before making her decision Monday.

Holy hell it really is The Shire!

One can only hope that an aide has NOT whispered this tidbit in someone’e ear! What are the chances that Faux News has aired this news?

Trump points to this as support for his doing the same, in…3…2…1…

Only to be told “she was basically forced to delay, by opposition parties” because she is too goddamned popular.

No lol. It’s Parliamentary Democracy. That’s what would happen up here in Canada as well.

Fine. We’ll postpone our parliamentary elections.

Meanwhile, we’ve got a congressional and presidential election that is happening on 3 November, come hell or high water.

Let me see if I got this right. Right wingers control government in UK and US where pandemic is rampant. Liberals control NZ, where they went 102 days without a new case.

Can I infer that intelligence in leadership has something to do with pandemic response?

Trump can point to this delay all he wants.
All we have to say back to the jackass is that Parliaments move elections forwards or backwards in time anytime they need to, but the United States operates on a strict schedule defined by the Constitution which has never been modified, regardless of War of Pandemic.

The mentioned right wing ACT party considers itself “liberal”. The “market liberal” meaning is probably dmoninant outside US.

Sure, but don’t be too quick to equate it with left-right issues. Sweden has a social democratic prime minster, and, well you probably know how they have been doing (and probably at least in economic issues their “right wing” parties wouldn’t be even right wing democrats in USA)

The irony is PM Ardern is delaying the election because she instituted a 2 week lockdown to suppress an outbreak, which is something Trump would never do -though our numbers are exponentially worse.

They have 58 infections total and are closing down. We have that number of cases in the US literally every 2 minutes.

Yes, very important to remember that in a parliamentary system election dates are more flexible, and are not tied to specific dates like our are. So the U.S. is not comparable.

Sneaky little Hobbitses!

If they do they can make his head explode by also mentioning that Ardern was in the lead when she delayed the election but did it anyway to give the other parties a fair chance to campaign against her.
