New Hampshire Governor Sununu Opts Against A Senate Run In Gift To Democrats | Talking Points Memo

Republican Gov. Chris Sununu of New Hampshire announced Tuesday that he’d decided not to challenge Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) in 2022, a huge break for Democrats in what could have become a potential Republican flip.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, reportedly even flew in to fete Sununu personally.

You misspelled “fellate.”

Point of Order!

Murphy’s win in NJ was not a squeaker.
The VA race was a squeaker.

Is Sununu crazy and rabid enough? I think not.

I am a NH resident very active in NH Dem politics. Sununu is a savvy and self-interested politician. He is in free-fall in NH due to some extreme measures passed by his libertarian state house majority and signed by him. I don’t interpret this as a “gift” to Democrats. I interpret this as a recognition he would have likely lost. NH Dems have a recent history of nominating incredibly weak candidates…as opposed to Hassan who is a strong candidate. Sununu would rather run against a (presumptive) bad (D) than a good one.

He is if he’s like his father.

Nother NH resident here. From the North Country, where an anti-Vax mini-Trump who was leading the race for Mayor of our small city died of Covid before the election. His rabid Trumpist supporters told people to still vote for him and the deceased came within a hundred votes of winning. Thank God we were a union town…until the mill closed.

Shaheen and Hassen are both ex governors. I too am somewhat active in Dem politics. Everyone expected that if Sununu ran, he would win. So this is very good news.

Yeah … seeing as how it has grown to a 2.7% margin … over 67,000 votes …
… the “squeaker” part has met the same fate as that part of every one of my dog’s toys!

And becoming more so daily, it seems.

Republicans don’t seem to be attracting the kind of top flight Senate candidates one would expect them to during a president’s first term midterm. McConnell’s got to be losing his shit. Do turtles shit?

New Hampshire is one of those states demographically transforming from red to blue, as opposed to Ohio that seems to be continuously reddening. A perceived centrist like Sununu is the GOP’s best chance – hopefully they are only left with a nutty Trumper type who won’t actually challenge Hassan.

30,000 ft impression …
Christopher Sununu age 47 is looking at the political landscape and thinking … gee, maybe would not be a good idea to run out and get the 4 or 5 permanent - lifetime - white supremacist gang- face tattoos that may be necessary to be embraced in the current GQP madness …
