Who outranks whom is a matter of protocols that were semi-officially formalized at the Congress of Vienna in 1814, with allowances for local modifications. Emperor outranks king, king outranks duke, and so on. Whether the monarch is Catholic or Protestant comes into play, too. All royals outrank elected peasants of those newfangled representative democracies… at least they were new-fangled in 1814. Royal French heads had been lopped off only 20 years prior. And, at least in Europe, the pecking order from the Congress of Vienna is reflected in who has precedence for funerals, coronations, and the like to this day.

Yeah that was the first thing I thought of when I saw the headline…that these 10s of thousands of people affected by all these horrific moves in the first few months of this MALadministration can’t get back the damage inflicted, even after reversals. Their lives are upended; leases, mortgages, credit ratings, visas, papers, records, status, marriages, family disruptions, etc. Costs for travel and lodging and lawyers. They might as well have lost everything in a devastating fire.

It’s an absolute snub to the Leader of the Free World that He should be placed behind many suckers and losers who are of far less stature and importance to the world and they’re lucky if they escape sanctions.

If I was a foreign student trying for an education I would look elsewhere for a university as customs/ICE are clueless and cannot have any sort of coherent policy. As it is I have ceased any thought to a day visit to the border town of Nogales, Sonora. I used to go on weekends for lunch as it’s just 50 miles south. But now the risk from American border law people is far too great even for an American citizen. ICE is a dangerous out of control sadistic outfit.

He thinks he’s going there to do some transactional business with world leaders. He’s really not very focused much on the pontiff’s passing I believe, seeing how he’s not very good with things having to do with death in general. For instance, he wouldn’t show up for veterans when they were brought home in caskets. He uses Arlington as a PR backdrop for campaigning and not for much of anything else. He avoids memorials of WW2 veterans on the anniversary of their death here and abroad.
Can’t see him going to the funeral for any other reason than he needs to find someone or something he can upstage and elbow his way in on.
He’s been marginalized by the entire world with his tariff bullshit, with the exception of the most ruthless dictators. He’s just going there to try to capture some of the limelight other politicians will be getting. The Pope’s death has already inadvertently upstaged him at a really unfortunate moment for him while he’s been too busy destroying the foundation of our country.

I do not understand Wolfers logic here. S Korea may have no tariffs on US, but the Trump tariffs are based on trade deficits and perceived slights, not tariffs. Hell, he even tariffed penguins.
S Korea is desperate to reduce Trump’s 25% tariffs on steel, aluminum, and cars, as the US is a huge market for cars, appliances, etc.
