A good government group spearheading a national effort to bar Donald Trump from the election next year moved to remove him from the ballot in Michigan, citing the Constitution’s Disqualification Clause.
Why are these efforts being called “removing him from the ballot”? Since a ballot for the 2024 elections has not even been made, no one is “on the ballot” - In reality, these efforts are designed to ratify the fact that Trump is not eligible to be on the ballot in the first place, not remove him from it. I fear that this only helps Trump spread his propaganda and reinforce the lie that he is already on the ballot and now is being “removed” from it.
Mixed feelings about these efforts. One wonders if they succeed we will not see candidates kept off ballots sans evidence of bad behavior, similar to the current practice of impeachment without evidence. That the former president should never hold any office again goes without saying however he is kept therefrom.
Removal of a candidate from the ballot should come from a court order, not a SOS decree. Otherwise, every state Republican election official will start disqualifying Democrats on the flimsiest of pretenses, forcing them to go to the Courts to get back on.
These Trump Disqualification lawsuits serve that purpose by:
Forcing the Courts to rule on how they will approach this topic well in advance of the election, and
Establishing precedents that will likely serve as the basis for the 14th amendment disqualification process (absent Congressional action on the topic).
Politically, we’re also establishing a record of Republicans opposing disqualification which can be used against them if they try it against Democrats in the future.
Be careful what you wish for - if Reps decide to dump Trump I’m not crazy about seeing a ballot here in GA that reads Dem. Biden/Harris, Rep DeSantis/Haley Haley/DeSantis, Green West and Ind Kennedy.
I hope he’s putting all that Republican dark money in a safe place. He can’t win. He knows he can’t win. And I’m not sure how he sees throwing the race to the fascists just because he’s pissed off about vaccinations is a legitimate long term strategy.
Disqualification is a bad move. It feeds into the narrative that the indictments against Trump are just part of a scheme to prevent Trump from winning in 2024.
But the reality is that even Republicans such as Niki Haley have said that Trump can’t win the general. Trump should be defeated decisively in the election once again. That or actual imprisonment are the only things that finally will shut him up.
Yeah, I’m not sure he’s all there. After listening to him for 2 hours on Bill Maher’s podcast, he sounds pretty scary. He’s pissed off about more than just vaccines - I found hearing him talk about his dad and uncle’s assassinations pretty troublesome as far as putting him in the Oval Office.
I have read all three petitions (Wisconsin, Colorado and now Michigan) The petitions cites a lot of evidence on Trump’s part so none of these are thin on support the premise that DJT is disqualified. However, a conviction of the crime of insurrection is just and the GOP may find itself with a primary winner who is disqualified from the ballot if the DC case occurs as planned. Couldn’t happen to a better party.
