New Book: How GOP Leaders Felt About Trump Following Jan 6

In the immediate aftermath of the deadly Capitol insurrection last year, congressional GOP leaders reportedly did not mince words when they privately vented about then-President Trump’s central role in stoking the riot.

McCarthy and McConnell ultimately backed off of taking action against Trump, however, out of fear of retribution from the former president.

If they had done what they (said they) wanted to do to Trump via impeachment, we’d actually have something like bipartisan affirmation of the rule of law and the peaceful transition of power. Maybe even a shared sense of purpose on issues facing us that would result in bipartisan legislation.

But they didn’t. And here we are.

Pretty much sums up GOP courage.

Who cares about their pathetic attempts at redemption?

Actions speak, not words.

Only a handful of them actually voted to impeach/convict in their respective chambers.

McConnell says he’d back Trump in 2024. McConnell places Republican partisan interest over the national interest. Deplorable.

… … … …
Fucking cowards could not speak the truth in public about trump and what he did prior to and on 1/6/21
They’re the worst sort of cowards.

Um…this supposed to be ironic?

It’s been said before that the likes of McCarthy and McConnell fear their base to the point where they can’t talk like this on the record or on the floor of the legislative body. After 1/6 they’re even more sotto voce.

I agree. I think that was a moment of truth for this country; a turning point. But Republicans chose the wrong path - a cowardly turn leading to fascism. So now we’re forced to anxiously await DoJ to deliver justice. It didn’t have to be this way.

The only good thing about this, I suppose, is that even the first draft of history finds McCarthy and McConnell’s actions in the wake of the deadly insurrection to be reprehensible.

If they had impeached and convicted the Orange Criminal…just what “retribution” was the Orange monster going to bring? He would have been out of the white house, gone from our government. What is he going to do? Call all those little cowards bad names?

Great Post…Deserves a repeat.

To say that they were cowards and selfish does not do their shallowness justice. Here are three stages of childhood that they failed to even reach that level

(1) Adolescent boys

(2) or maybe sixth-graders

(3) or pre-school

Any of the above ages would have acted more responsively than those two, McConnell and McCarthy.

(1) Statesmen, rising above childishness into adulthood would be remembered by the bulk of the population leading us from the precipice of corruption and division

(2) How many grateful Americans would have lauded them for ridding us from Trump’s depravity–just what a good kid likes to hear

(3) Lots of pats on the back as Mom and Dad would be so proud

No…they traded all of the above for the cruelty of the modern GOP. There is something anti-social about that… and do NOT mention the money angle. The grateful nation I referenced above would have been so thankful that copious amounts of money would come to them.

I don’t know if anyone has said this yet, but who gives a damn what these idjits thought in private? They toed the party line and systematically destroyed as many of our institutions and political norms as they could get away with. And they’re still at it - blowing off constitutional amendments in their individual states, undermining the right to vote, and working to overturn elections. Scorched earth on anything that might possibly help their constituents. Says all we need to know. :rage::rage::rage::rage::rage:
