Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney was subpoenaed on Thursday evening to appear before congressional investigators on Friday morning, Axios was first to report.
Dems have to challenge this in court and charge Barr with contempt for refusing to charge Mulvaney with criminal contempt. They’re getting plenty of damning testimony from witnesses who’ve agreed to appear but they need the drama of a showdown to score political points against the WH. It’s the cover-up what gets ya, not the crime. They have to squeeze every last bit of drama out of this.
OT but it’s going to be an interesting day. Trump is already screaming on Twitter about the $2 million settlement, and the Post has excerpts from the Anonymous book that are pretty sizzly.
And somebody filed a lawsuit alleging that he told Jordan about the Dr. at Ohio State masturbating in front of him and Jordan just laughed it off. I know you know, but if you’re making that list…
Definitely another interesting Infrastructure week.
And the second rule is that something always drops sometime after 4 PM Eastern on Friday, which usually eclipses everything which already happened that week.
Thing is, they understand when to drop some hideous news story they want to try to bury, but they don’t understand the more important concept of trying not to do hideous things in the first place.
Somehow, ignoring a subpoena is considered a badge of honor with these people. Congress has very broad power to collect information pursuant to an investigation. Failure to comply with a subpoena, sadly, relies on the Executive branch to prosecute the offender. Congress has little ability to compel cooperation.
It makes me wonder how much members of the tRump administration can get away with.
I have given up trying to figure out their long-term strategies. I think they are counting on a presidential pardon. They don’t seem to understand that Trump views everyone as expendable and he won’t pardon anyone unless it benefits him.
They have inherent contempt, and can sue in court for actual contempt, and the courts can tell US Marshals to go and get 'em. If Barr tells them to stand down, they can hold him in contempt and impeach him. Refusing to cooperate can only hurt Repubs. We all have to remember that the political optics of impeachment far outweigh the legalities, and that’s the holy grail for 2020.
