Perhaps they are starting to figure out the Leopard Face Eating Party is not their friend?
From today. How to destroy the economy.
Every single Republican needs to be asked about this most recent Cato report. This is a mess and needs to be kept in the spotlight.
Sasha is still stumped as to how they’ve gotten away with so much destruction is such a short period of time, as if our shining democracy was really built on quicksand. Sigh . . . .
To revive the terms from the Global War on Terror, Stephen would be a ‘high value detainee,’ and, so, might reasonably be traded for all those held at CECOT.
On the condition that he serve out the balance of their sentences, of course.

I’m not sure what the repercussions are. He’s had a lot of rulings against his actions, but they don’t appear to be slowing him down or causing him to reverse very many actions. I know he released a couple of people from custody, but he’s ignoring most everything else.
I guess I have a modest definition of repercussions. What we know and the emerging understanding of what we don’t know. That they have gone to such lengths to cruelly mistreat anyone they can find who looks different, that they have gone to such lengths to obscure who they have targeted, on what evidence, where they are being kept. That they have gone to such lengths to move people between jurisdictions so they can’t access representation and their families don’t know where they are. The identities of the individuals, never mind their personal circumstance and their alleged violations, who need protection and due process. The terms of the rendition arrangements and the countries involved. Not so naive as to expect being able to do anything about it anytime soon. Taking what we can get.

as the TACO Trade or the Trump-Always-Chickens-Out negotiating style.
I so hope it sticks, becomes a ‘thing’. Would love to watch a reporter, while bowing, mention TACO in a question to Donnie, who will demand what it means. Whoa!!

Backing up to 30K feet on the whole CECOT debacle. Trump made a blatant move to abuse the law in a step to make good on his promise to deport millions, which was never remotely realistic in legal or logistical terms. His audacious move leaked, and the repercussions have been rolling out ever since. Looking forward to ongoing unearthing and reporting of details on just how extra-legal this whole mess is.
Let’s charge the geniuses behind deciding to render people legally in the country to third countries and to return certified refugees to countries where their lives are in danger (i.e., Afghanistan.)

The Republican majorities in Congress are complicit.

And the Heritage guys are really, really quiet.
They’re coconspirators.
They’d hardly want to draw attention to themselves if things go south.
Not a big fan of denigrating tacos like this

I think we’ve learned that the goal had very little to do with “illegal” immigrants, and everything to do with establishing that Trump, not the law, says who’s legal and who’s illegal.
The list of games they’ve figured out to cruelly punish legal and illegal immigrants is truly amazing. And frightening. Move fast and break things. Use immigration ‘authorities’ broad powers to sweep up and detain crowds of people who look wrong, without due process. Alien Enemies Act. Reimagining rendition as a tool. Made a mistake… oops. Revoking immigration approvals, including green cards and student visas. Overriding approvals you disagree with on the basis ‘they never should have been issued in the first place’. Declaring birthright citizenship isn’t constitutional because… Haphazard family separations. Ugghhh.

The tacos can take it. And willingly sacrifice themselves, since they’re going to get eaten anyway.
Of course the legal status is a feature, not a bug.
This establishes the precedent that anyone can be removed to a gulag in another country.
In time I assume that some may found to be actual citizens, although the administration may wait on that until the Supreme Court rubber stamps the present policy.
Basics.
It is not being said very loudly, but this administration has done almost zero administrating. I have actually started worrying less that they are ripping the country out from under us to be replaced by a totalitarian empire. They do not have the discipline for focus to actually do that. America is going to come home, find out the house has been trashed, the valuables ransacked and the copper wire and plumbing ripped out. And then rebuild.
