This article is part of TPM Cafe, TPM’s home for opinion and news analysis. The following is an excerpt from “The Fixers: The Bottom-Feeders, Crooked Lawyers, Gossipmongers and Porn Stars Who Created the 45th President” (Penguin Random House, on sale Jan. 14, 2020).
“I just heard that they broke into the office of one of my personal attorneys, a good man, and it’s a disgraceful situation. It’s a total witch hunt,” he told reporters after the raids.
There’s been a series of pretty successful witchhunts, considering how many witches have been caught and got jail time.
It’s pretty bad when we can look at parts of the tenure of AG Sessions with some nostalgia. The current occupant of that role is filled with more rot than my septic tank.
In the universe where we thought he had been pressured into writing the memo and only did it because he was the only one who would protect an investigation and documentation of the shitslide of high crimes and misdemeanors.
So we thought.
Boy were we wrong.
OTOH, Rosenstein isn’t going to escape with clean hands. And this time I’m right. I just know it.
“As the searches were under way, agents arrived at the Greenwich, Connecticut, home of David Pecker and at the Manhattan apartment building of Pecker’s top editor, Dylan Howard. The FBI had subpoenas for both men and search warrants authorizing the immediate seizure of their cellphones. Mr. Pecker, who was at the dentist when the agents showed up, returned home and turned over his device.”
Who is David Pecker? What’s he got to do with this?
National Inquirer, which conducted operations for trump to prevent publication of embarrassing stories. Unlawful, but not part of the russia investigation. (And likely done at the same time because otherwise Cohen would have told them to destroy evidence of the, erm, collaboration.)
Head of American Media, Inc., the owner of the National Enquirer, and longtime Trump pal. Pecker did the catch-and-kill on Karen McDougal’s story, which was part of the investigation into illegal contributions to the Trump campaign. It’s unclear why they were not prosecuted for that.
So he can lie and “misremember” (a word spellcheck does not recognize)? The next time we see Sessions in front of a camera, he better be entering a plea in response to the charge of perjury. No one is above the law, right?
Yeah, that struck me, too. Sessions had recused himself; what the hell was Rosenstein doing telling him about a case involved in the reason for Sessions’ recusal? Rosenstein had a very ambiguous role throughout his tenure during the Trump administration. He wanted to be seen by the media as the Straight Cop, yet he would not break with the mafia around Trump. Basically, the guy was a shitweasel.
