A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
Missouri state Rep. Mary Elizabeth Coleman (R) has proposed a measure that would deter people from leaving the state, which bans abortion after eight weeks of pregnancy, to have the procedure.
You can’t leave the state to go do a thing that’s legal in that other state. It comes to mind that these are the people screaming all the time about tyranny.
“Other people wanted to rob the bank too, so don’t blame me for robbing it.”
one of the arguments that ex-Trump legal adviser John Eastman’s been making is that his plot with Trump to steal the 2020 election wasn’t criminal because there were other people besides Eastman who were feeding Trump conspiracies theories about voter fraud.
Coleman’s proposal would set up a vigilante system of civil liability similar to what Texas has , enabling private citizens to sue anyone involved in facilitating an out-of-state abortion.
This concept of a vigilante justice system is incredibly disturbing. Don’t the goopers understand that the must obvious result is the destruction of the social fabric that binds us together as a nation? Perhaps that’s their goal but I really don’t think so.
I think they’re just trying to score political points with their base (mostly the evangelical segment) without regard to the predictable negative consequences of their ill-conceived policy. At any rate, it sucks and these vigilante justice policies must be thrown out in court if we expect to continue as democracy.
One of the charges includes “Obstruction of an Official Proceeding and Aiding and Abetting”
So, DOJ has a successful prosecution on a charge that Donald Trump quite obviously should be charged with. Based upon his texts alone, he aided and abetted the rioters after he saw what they were doing at the capitol.
Pauline Kael once likened the Leslie Nielsen character in Airplane and the Naked Gun films to guys who sit down next to you on planes and as they talk you realize they’re crazy. They look like normal business dudes, and they fit in that world, but really they’re crazy. Eastman is one of those people.
And he’s a constitutional legal scholar? Jan6th Committee has their eyes on conspiracy between him and Trump. DOJ is likely already lining up their ducks.
Umm… did anybody say anything about Coleman’s bill being unconstitutional? How can she restrict free movement of people between states? Are we gonna have internal passports now?
When Putin invaded Ukraine on 24 February, she and various collaborators from the world of cryptocurrency launched the Ukraine DAO (decentralised autonomous organisation). It was a 1/1 non-fungible token (NFT) of the Ukrainian flag, and the group invited people to bid for collective ownership of the image, raising $7.1m in five days.
“We felt, me and my friends in crypto, that we had to react somehow. I’m personally convinced that in situations like this, activism is the only thing that can keep you sane. Just looking at disasters and tragedies and not doing anything about it is really detrimental for the world, but also it slowly destroys you and makes you feel helpless.” The money has already been distributed to the organisation Come Back Alive, which has been mobilising support for the Ukrainian army since 2014 with medical care, ammunition, training and defence analytics.
