Mississippi Takes Step Toward Dropping Confederate Image From Flag

No, they were just traitors. There is no honor in committing treason for the right to own slaves. It’s not like they were invaded either. They lost an election and THEY started the war in response. Would they be honorable for doing it again when Trump loses?

My entire family is from the south. I’ve had this argument for decades. My ancestors fought for the confederacy. They were disgusting morons for that and I will never honor their memory. They don’t deserve to be remembered. They wasted their lives to preserve assholes’ right to own, abuse and rape other people. Fuck them and their heritage.

This is a really big deal, considering the state Capitol has a statute celebrating Confederate women during the Civil War.

“I know there are many good people who … believe that this flag is a symbol of our Southern pride and heritage,” said White, the Republican speaker pro tempore of the House. “But for most people throughout our nation and the world, they see that flag and think that it stands for hatred and oppression.”

Someone must have told this asshole not to make the “good people on both sides” claim, so he refers only to the people on the wrong side as “good people!” WTF?!?

And, in the process, they killed soldiers who were fighting to abolish slavery.

By that token, I will be on the lookout for the ISIS flag being proudly displayed at Veterans’ Day ceremonies.

Honoring dead is not honoring a society built on human slavery.
Get rid of the stars. It’s a start.

I suppose not ratifying the 13th Amendment until March 16, 1995 was also a statement of the hatred and oppression that is your Southern pride and heritage.

I think this forum is better than those that repeat lame attempts at internet hoaxes, and, for that matter, both-siderism.

This is a perfect conflict between a pure democracy and a representative form of government. Which will win, and what does it say about MS and the USA?

MAGAninny is mucho confused. .

President @realDonaldTrump is prosecuting individuals tearing down our statues to the fullest extent of the law!

"our" statues?
No, Pumpkin. The whole point is that they are NOT "our" statues. They are lawn jockeys for racists who have a fetish for symbols of slavery and treason. Trump. You. The KKK. And we don't want YOUR kind to have YOUR fetishes fulfilled in OUR public spaces.

Excuse me, if this flag is a symbol of people "who … believe that this flag is a symbol of our Southern pride and heritage,” then I must observe that their sense of pride and heritage is completely perverted and detestable. Enslavement of other human beings? Brutal and often murderous treatment of people because of the color of their skin? Trashing families? . . . I could go on forever. If you can seriously defend this inhuman behavior in our history, than you are indeed inhuman!

A testament to the educational system in MS.

But for most people throughout our nation and the world, they see that flag and think that it stands for hatred and oppression.

As compared to the rest of the world

Okay, point well taken.

Mississippi attempted this in 2001… they voted 64/31 against changing the flag.

Sure hope it works this time.

The terminology here is interesting and useful to understand in its application here. Most news outlets have been accurately calling it the “Confederate Battle Flag” or “Confederate battle emblem,” for a while now. That’s what this flag was called during the Civil War, a symbol of their war of secession, which they proudly flew into battle. Preserving this adjective helps shine a light on just what went on when traitors attempted to overthrow our country from within. It helps those who are voting to change the Mississippi state flag explain the truth of the matter. Just a simple adjective. Really very interesting.

It’s just there to remind everyone that masks are for sissies.

Color me shocked if they pass a flag change. They still have to “debate” it, pass something, and get the gov’na to sign- all say they will, but the proof is in the pudding.

but must include the phrase “In God We Trust.”

Nothing like throwing some cold war anti-first amendment hot sauce on your flag.
But MS is not Congress, and a flag is not a law.
