Minnesota Guv. Apologizes After CNN Crew At Protests Get Arrested | Talking Points Memo

Oh it’s ALWAYS a ‘training issue’ - it’s NEVER ‘intentional’. Arrests, assaults, “mistakes were made” - in the passive past tense. Procedures were not followed ‘properly’.

I don’t doubt for a second it was a shakedown. A hassle.

I just watched the video on Facebook and he showed them his press pass. He held it out for them to inspect. Also, he was holding a microphone and then there was the camera crew filming the whole thing. There’s no doubt they knew he was a reporter, and yet they arrested him anyway.

Well, you know, he was wearing a mask, so they couldn’t be sure it was him…

I just watched the reporter being arrested. Here he is talking into a microphone and being filmed and is totally calm and asking the police where they should be. He has his press credentials in plain sight. These cops are out of control neanderthals (I know a huge insult to neanderthals)
Were they getting a message filtered down from the liar in chief to shut this filming down so we wouldn’t be seeing the horror that’s taking place?

LWPOC is a thing. We know that when we leave the house.

For far too many, It would have to take a Rod Serling-esque experience for those not in that position to truly understand.

Your basic premise has merit, fire the incompetent, unbalanced police officers making these unbelievably bad decisions but I’m afraid you are not totally informed yourself. The Governor, like the President can not make the decisions for the mayor and police chief of Minneapolis.

“In the course of clearing the streets and restoring order at Lake Street and Snelling Avenue, four people were arrested by State Patrol troopers, including three members of a CNN crew,” the Minnesota State Patrol tweeted. “The three were released once they were confirmed to be members of the media.”

Oh yeah. Every protestor brings a $10,000 camera with backpack battery pack, $2,000 microphone and presents press credentials. I understand the confusion.

Those were State Police, according to the reports I’ve seen.

I actually don’t think it’s as simple as firing the arresting officers. Those guys were standing around with the crew looking off into space. It’s pretty clear they got a call to arrest the TV crew as they were standing there. There is a supervisor on that scene that has some explaining to do.

Doesn’t this put into question any arrests made by this police department during this protest?

From what I understand, they were arrested by Minnesota State Patrol officers who were called in for help.
This is not their regular job. They generally patrol the highways and issue tickets. They have a worse attitude than cops because they believe they are the cream of the LE agencies and should be treated as the highway gods they are. Every trooper I have been pulled over by has that attitude.

NGOs like the ACLU often do the legal work pro bono, plus it’s possible to due for damages and legal fees, and at least settle if your suit is even somewhat meritorious as going to trial is extremely expensive for PDs and cities and makes for bad PR. And no, I’m not afraid of my life turning into a bad B movie with cops taking turns driving by my home several times a day to intimidate me. But, good luck with your acquiescence to and/or being ok with police brutality. Very liberal.

We’ll just have to agree to disagree, to me this is a malice vs incompetence issue.

You would have to be a complete and utter moron to arrest a reporter while being filmed. This is sheer stupidity, fueled in no doubt by their underlying racial animosity. It’s hard to separate the two, but any reasonable person would have to conclude that this was an incredibly stupid move on the part of the police.

To say that they purposely did this WHILE BEING FILMED makes absolutely no sense. They’re idiots, pure and simple. The common clay of the new west, but with badges. And hopefully not for long.

One thing’s for sure, Trump just got a hot button issue of the sort he loves handed to him on a platter, and he’s going to milk it for all it’s got, to rally his idiot white racist base, cow the media and turn the election into a “law and order” referendum.

Of course with the election over 5 months away and the pandemic being a far bigger immediate story, I’m not sure how effective that’ll be. But he’s desperate and is going to latch onto anything he thinks can save him, and this is right up his disgusting alley.

Lots of whites out there who can’t stand Trump and are open to voting for Biden but are also POC-fearing racists who could be pushed into voting for Trump lest those hordes of African-American male bird watchers demand that they leash their dogs.

While good faith, conscientious, ethical, respectful, NON racist folks are debating whether it’s idiocy or malice, the racist cops are smirking and gloating at a job well done.

They get their white power message across to their base, as we wring our hands struggling to assess their motive or intellect.

Focus on the actions, the behavior, the pattern. Leave the motives and excuses to the shrinks and attorneys.

The difference between the two CNN crews is not just racial. The ones who were arrested were dealing with State Police. The ones who were not were dealing with National Guard. I’d bet the Guard folks are much more aware of both race and proper action than the police were, given the examples of police behavior so far.

I’m not saying that the State Police would not have treated the two crews differently over race, but this doesn’t demonstrate that.

The era of video recordation. More and more we see the truth of how law is enforced in this country. The Minneapolis Police started the conflagration with what looked like a murder on video and now have acted stupidly on video. The truth is inescapable. We have law enforcement problems.

Anyone figure out who this guy is?

Nice catch. The actual protesters were having none of his shit.

Lemme guess, the local president of the 3%.

I’m pretty sure one of the root problems for a lot of this is that cops are in fact not held to a higher standard and in reality are often given a pass on actions that would land anyone else in a lot of trouble.
