MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Negotiators for the city of Minneapolis agreed with the state Friday to ban the use of chokeholds by police and to require officers to report and intervene anytime they see an unauthorized use of force by another officer.
This looks promising.
I have been privately fuming for years that things like BLM don’t move the ball much. We need legislation, I thought…and I kindof expected that to mean Federal laws. But a city taking BACK the police department, cutting off it’s funding and rebuilding the whole thing from the ground up is faster than some legislative push and avoids Moscow Mitch McConnell.
This article references how Camden NJ did the same thing…successfully.
A restructuring could include redirecting funding to community-based safety programs and create a “public safety department” to replace the traditional police department. Bender told the Star-Tribune that social workers and medical professionals may begin responding to many calls now handled by armed police officers.

Okay, well, I guess it’s a step.

This is absolutely meaningless smoke blown to calm the angry swarm. Guess who decides what is “authorized” or not? The cop kneeling on the neck, and his pals!
Who is the idiot that came up with the idea that a knee with full weight placed on the neck of a non-resisting individual was a good idea? What kind of sadist would dream up this shit?
George Floyd was handcuffed and in the back of the police car. He was pulled out of the car, placed prone on the ground and then subjected to a knee on the neck compressing his airway and carotid arteries. What kind of monster thinks this is an acceptable method and acceptable police behavior?
The above only discusses one specific method of starving a brain and body of oxygen. There are a whole plethora of choke holds that are intended to subdue by reducing the supply of oxygen, and any of these methods, if used for significant duration, will result in death.
A choke hold can be useful to subdue, but it comes down to the quality of the individual performing the choke hold. We pay physicians who specialize in anesthesia a shit ton of money to knock people out safely. Do you want some low-salaried cop to do the same? Hell, no!
If you were only to remove racism from Law Enforcement, you would still have a very scary, very dangerous, and separate fiefdom that is ripe for corruption. Writes it’s own rules and sets itself above the law.
Seems like a goal of my lifetime, if the Mpls. council does what they are saying, to tear it all down and start over. I applaud this and all the sunlight and oxygen they can bring to bear.
I don’t know, but it is amazing how many of the cop takedowns of protesters this last week, it seems cops come running for the great taste of NeckKnee! They are knocking each other over in their rush to be 2nd, 3rd on the protester and they all come in knee first. SMH
Holy Moly. Park Police lied so cavalierly on Tuesday. And is now taking it back.

Taking their batons and going home if we don’t play by their rules.
Emergency Response Team has resigned from the team, a total of 57 officers, as a show of support for the officers who are suspended without pay after shoving Martin Gugino, 75. They are still employed, but no longer on ERT.
Yes, there seems like there should be laws and strict supervision that make sure, once the police system is rebuilt, that it has NO involvement in politics. You don’t support candidates, you don’t show up at rallies, you don’t do photo-ops where you all travel to DC to stand behind Chump, you don’t wear political shirts or hats, and you don’t get to set yourself apart from the civil service that pays your salaries. I mean, Clerks Of Court, Court Reporters, City Admin & Staff, County Ag agents don’t have their own benificent legions, you don’t have them calling your home every night asking for donations, they don’t get their own separate legal and professional support teams. You are city, state, or county employees, not a separate breed of humans.
