Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced on Tuesday that the state government will be sending all registered Michigan voters applications to mail in their ballots as a safety measure against COVID-19.
Absentee and mail in ballots can only be mailed by states to the household via certified method, and must be insured. And require a signature to be left by the mail carrier. And the signer must show the mail carrier two forms of identification.
Umm…sorry, but that’s not true in all states. I am registered in Michigan, I get my absentee ballot sent to my address in Germany with no such requirements.
Also, since I always sent my request for a ballot using the (generic) form that Democrats Abroad provided, I did not know realize that Michigan has one very, very important difference — there is a box that you can check on the application that says “send me a ballot via mail for every election” (check once and you get it in perpetuity). Just found out by coincidence from a friend in southeast Michigan that this existed and, sure enough, checked with the Secy of State office for requesting ballots and there it is, on the official Michigan form, so I am using the State of Michigan form this year. My parents have been getting their ballots sent to them by mail for years (Michigan does NOT require you to give a reason.)
So PSA message to all fellow Michiganders: check the “always” box when filling out your application!!!
