MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Marlins’ home opener Monday night against Baltimore has been postponed as the Marlins deal with a coronavirus outbreak that stranded them in Philadelphia.
A “mild” preview of what’s to come when they try to roll out football this fall.
8 players, out of an active roster of 26. In less than one week. In the sport that actually can practice social distancing while playing, for at least 90% of the game.
ETA: Correction…its 14, not 8…though that includes coaches as well as players.
Ok I understand the love of sports; we all played in our time but this is ridiculous. Just yesterday it was found out that a Clipper player tested positive after going to a strip club in Florida. Apparently he needed a snack but he also got a smack of C19. No one was even ‘dancing’ was his claim to innocence.
The boys have got to be stopped before it’s too late. Thank gawd the Blue Jays aren’t playing at home. I like them well enough but at this time only at a distance.
The problem is that most of the players are boys or older guys thinking they are boys. They will act like boys and that spells trouble. I know that first hand.
“But I think it’s really good that baseball is opening.” - DJT, July 23, 2020

“It looks like football is opening. It looks like sports are opening. We — we have — it’s a tremendous thing, psychologically, for our country.” - ibid
There appears to be zero enforcement of the MLB protocols, and professional baseball players are not exactly known for their discretion. That said, I won’t be especially displeased if the virus takes down the Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers.
Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, the Kansas City Chiefs starting guard, and the only medical school graduate playing in the NFL, opted out of playing this year. He has spent the off season since the Super Bowl working on the frontlines of the Covid pandemic. Duvernay-Tardif said
“Being at the frontline during this offseason has given me a different perspective on the pandemic and the stress it puts on individuals and our healthcare system,” Duvernay-Tardif shared. “I cannot allow myself to potentially transmit the virus in our communities simply to play the sport that I love. If I am to take risks, I will do it caring for patients.”
So, now the Marlins have a problem that is preventing the team from playing ball. What happens to the already truncated schedule? What about the teams they were scheduled to play, and what about their other games? The schedule, barely viable as it, is will collapse.
Team owners are as ignorant about this as Hollywood. Neither one of these ‘industries’ can make do with postponing things a few weeks. Not when we have no national leadership to put things on a path to normalcy.
Wake and smell the coffee and make alternate plans! Jesus, it just takes some realistic thinking. But professional sports teams and Hollywood are accustomed to doing little to earn their keep. They’ve become lazy and stratified in their thinking.
I woke up this morning in a particularly foul mood. I am sick and tired of Trump and his brand of sparkled flavored bullshit. I want my life back. All the happy talk coming out of the administration is going to prolong our suffering and it is completely unnecessary.
