Leading organizations of psychiatrists and psychologists are pushing back against President Donald Trump and other Republicans’ go-to argument that claims mass shootings are caused by mental illness, not easy access to guns.

“Leading organizations of psychiatrists and psychologists are pushing back against President Donald Trump and other Republicans’ go-to argument that claims mass shootings are caused by mental illness, not easy access to guns.”

Oh, c’mon, what in the hell do psychiatrists and psychologists know about mental health issues? I mean, really…*

“investigators have found no sign so far that either of the two suspected shooters were mentally ill.”

Sorry, but the GOP has us trapped in the circular argument: “Oh yeah? No evidence they were mentally ill? How about the fact that they went on a shooting rampage?”

THE GOP WANTS THE VIOLENCE.

Mental health, like patriotism, is another last refuge of assholes/Republicans: ignoring their own culpability, then lying about mental illness and thereby stigmatizing it further.

psychiatrists first noted that mental health programs are “severely underfunded in this country” to begin with

Thank the GOP for that one. At least that’s my experience in my state.

It is astonishing that all developed nations have the same prevalence of mental illness, yet only the USA has frequent mass shootings. All developed nations except the USA have sensible laws regulating firearms. Could there possibly be a connection?

And, unfortunately, by doing so, they handed the GOP/NRA everything they needed to discredit their statement with the base. “They’re just looking for handouts”.

Well I’m confused. I thought it happened because some football players knelt during the anthem.

Can we blame Trump’s stupid, irrational comments on his own mental illness?

tRump, the guy that’s probably never seen a mental health counselor, psychologist or psychiatrist ever and should have been going regularly for his entire life. What would he know about calling out every shooter as mentally ill?

The LA Times has a nice article out where they studied all the mass shootings since 1966, and they do find that one of the things most of them had in common was some kind of violent event in their youth. Whether it was an attack on them, a parent committing suicide, or something similar, they had an early even that then helped to lead them to be isolated from society. Lots of people have something like that happen to them, but they don’t become mass killers because of intervention along the way, which sometimes includes mental health treatment. It would be great if we had more research like this, which led to mental health improvements for kids so they don’t grow up into monsters.

So, there is a mental health aspect to this, but it has no relation to what the Republicans are trying to say…no surprise there. And, of course they don’t believe it themselves, for non-white shooters they have all kinds of explanations…it’s only the white ones that require some kind of mental health excuse for blowing away a large number of people.

Mental health was all Trump had…that and trying to shame Congress into passing racist anti-immigration legislation and tying it to a gun safety bill…

  • Allowing Trump to continue the racist rhetoric

  • Allowing Congress to absorb the blame for the inaction on guns he and his Base desires

Was tRump pointing at himself when he blamed the violence on mental illness?

Other nations have mentally ill citizens, and they have media, and they have video games. None of them have gun violence of the scale our nation suffers from. I’ve contacted McSally, Sinema, and Biggs to remind them of that and to advocate for gun safety legislation as well as for federal legislation outlawing domestic terrorism. (Sorry @Chasseurbill; you beat me to it.)

I blame mass tweetings on mental illness.

What the psychiatrists need to do is include HATE as form of mental illness.

Individuals consumed with hate & fueled with anger are mass shooters.

Hate is an emotionally deranged syndrome of mental illness where rational thinking is obscured and only issues that align with the hatred are acceptable.

Hate is a mental illness.

This is consistent with Trump allowing mentally ill to purchase guns.
His base is filled with hate & thus mentally ill.

Mental illness is code for “my base full of hate”.

They’re right. The GOP should be focused on the chemtrails.

Or the faked moon landings…
