Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) has been spending an awful lot of time with President Donald Trump lately, sparking speculation that he’s angling for Mick Mulvaney’s acting chief of staff job.
Imagine finding your current prospects to dead-ending (perpetual minority), that the idea of auditioning to be Trump’s Chief of Staff makes sense to you.
Boggles the mind.
Then again - he has well earned all of the ceaseless indignities he would be dealt if he were to move into this position.
Ah, so Meadows also wants to resign his cushy job and retreat with his career in tatters and reputation (such as it is) ruined to spend more time with his family.
Will Mulvaney keep the OMB position? Or will Trump dump him completely?
My guess would be that Mulvaney would still keep the OMB job – at least long enough for Meadows to realize that there is no way having a “former Chief of Staff working in the White House” won’t make his job even more impossible than it already is…
Mulvaney must be kicking himself that he didn’t take that job as president of the U. of South Carolina, he might end being librarian in a federal prison.
Is Meadows’ district at risk of being de-mandered? While 3 of its four boundaries are necessarily determined by NC’s western state borders, the exclusion of Asheville keeps it a safe R district. If a chunk of Asheville were to be included (as is geographically natural) then he’s an endangered species.
This is a commentary on the House…and its future as a Democratic-laden Chamber for the foreseeable future. For Meadows it’s bad for at least two reasons:
He is in the Minority
The way Meadows rolls (Gingrich-style) “reaching across the aisle” means finding the
