Of course, but I do think McConnell is personally pissed by Trump’s actions. They cost him two senate seats and the Majority Leader job. They also threatened his well being and the well being of a lot of senators and staff. Also we have no idea what it was like for McConnell to be put on hold by Trump as the riot was being cheered and Trump held the National Guard back.

I think he always has just loathed trump, but he has uses for a useful idiot. trump is still an idiot, but now he is useless, so out in the trash he goes.
The bigger question here is how far will the turtle go in trying to redeem the reputation of his party (and of himself)? Will he encourage his caucus to either vote for conviction or abstain? Are Cotton and Ernst actually setting the table for abstention?

That is exactly what makes him the same Mitch, he only cares about his own power and god damn the constitution or any policy.
In the first impeachment he saw that it was good for Mitch to oppose impeachment and in return he got the Supreme Court. This time Trump has nothing to offer McConnell so there is no reason to support Trump. In fact in the short term, which is all old Mitch cares about, it may be better for the Republican Party and therefore Mitch and his power to vote for conviction.
Mitch is the master of cynical politics or politics only for power and whatever he does will be for that and only that reason, power for Mitch.
