McConnell Inadvertently Makes Dem Rep’s Argument Against Filibuster | Talking Points Memo

Well, it’s spring, and the painted turtles here in MA are coming out of their winter torpor and rising from the mud.

Mitch, not so much.

While we’re at it, let’s reform the Senate as well as the filibuster by granting statehood to Puerto Rico and DC.

Open it up to all territories. Make the argument that all Americans should have equal representation and voting rights.

Get rid of the vestiges of colonialism.

“McConnell hit back at Yarmuth calling the filibuster a ‘minority veto’…”

It’s true there’s such a thing as “The Tyranny of the Majority”.

It’s equally true there’s such a thing as “The Tyranny of the MINORITY”.

Which is the lesser of two evils?

“Kentucky’s veto” is a concept not found in the Constitution. And “McConnell’s silent, invisible, consequences-free veto” has had its abominable day.

Guam, the US Virgin Islands, N. Mariana Islands, and American Samoa should be grouped into a single state, called The American Territories. They should be treated as a single state, but any territory should be permitted to break off and form a separate state when its population equals that of any existing state. If the territories were given all the benefits of statehood, I expect some of them would pass Wyoming in population pretty soon.

“As the only congressional leader not from New York or California, I put Kentucky’s priorities front and center,” McConnell wrote.

For geography sake the VI could be with PR. But it does make sense to try to group territories.

lol at the presumption that arguments matter to the GOP. There is only power and the willingness to use it, or not.

Of course, if we really want to end our colonialism, we ought to see what they want.

Fair point. But it should be a matter of either you are in or you are out. Not saying cut them off and have no relationship but if they want to be any part of the United States then become full members.

McConnell defended the filibuster by arguing that the procedure exists to “block bad ideas from becoming law and to encourage bipartisan solutions”

If this were actually true, if Mitch had even once behaved as a principled leader, we would have no need for filibuster reform.

But the guy crying wolf now is the same guy determined to stop Democrats from passing any legislation, without regard to the consequences for the nation, merely for political gain. I can recite verse and chapter as to his misdeeds and unconscionable behavior, but let me leave it with Garland left out in the cold for almost a year, and Coney-Barrett getting an immediate vote prior to an election.

The argument doesn’t have to be made to Republican politicians. Arguing it to the public and to an international audience can put pressure on them.

THIS is what we need. I am prepared to endure 123 stories daily about Trump on TPM so long as we successfully move forward on our legislative agenda of which this Bill is an important part.

“block bad ideas from becoming law and to encourage bipartisan solutions”

Precisely the opposite. It has become the GOP’s tool for blocking GOOD ideas in order to prevent the Dems from claiming credit for ANY solutions.
