McCarthy Swears GOP Moved On From Big Lie. Cheney Was Just Booted For Not Buying It. | Talking Points Memo

In a head-spinning moment, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) falsely insisted that his caucus is done pushing the election fraud falsehoods that led to Rep. Liz Cheney’s (R-WY) ouster as its conference chair on Wednesday.

Qevin, you aren’t Mitch McConnell and you can’t walk that tightrope like Mitch does.

Either you bow down to the entire Trump fantasy or you are going to have to answer to Trump.

Moved on == pretend it never happened and try to stop talking about it one way or the other.

The major Michigan Election Fraud case has just filed a bombshell pleading claiming votes were intentionally switched from President Trump to Joe Biden. The number of votes is MASSIVE and determinative. This will prove true in numerous other States. All Republicans must UNIFY and not let this happen. If a thief robs a jewelry store of all of its diamonds (the 2020 Presidential Election), the diamonds must be returned. The Fake News media refuses to cover the greatest Election Fraud in the history of our Country. They have lost all credibility, but ultimately, they will have no choice!

hahahahahaha A pleading. It will die the same death the others have.

All the people who look back to the 1930s and ask how the Nazis rose to power only need to look at the GQP Big Lie and its effect to understand that we are watching it happen here right in front of us. Hopefully, our system will hold, but it’s getting scarier and scarier.

They sent Liz Cheney to the gulag today. Who’s on the hit list for tomorrow or next week or next month?

Do you honestly think that more and more people are believing it?

Liz took a stand when she did because of the internal GOP polling that shows how unpopular Trump is.

This is incoherent but not surprising. T**** refuses to put the big lie to rest. Sorry Kevin but you cannot just walk away from him and continue to seek his support and approval.

“Republicans are using Trump’s failed attempt to overturn the election as a guide to how you would change the system to make it possible.” – Jamelle Bouie, 3/30/21

If Trump lost the popular vote, the GQP planned to emphasize the Electoral College.
If he lost the Electoral College, they would promote spurious claims of election fraud and support challenges to the electors in Republican-controlled statehouses.

Recounts and GQP bills taking power over elections from local officials and giving it to the legislature to undermine the fair administration of elections and vote counting, are not a response to nonexistent voter fraud. They are a response to high Democratic voting turnout.

The GQP seems terrified of the potential of Democratic voters when all voters matter and count equally.

Republicans hope for scenarios where they can lose by millions of votes and still win the Electoral College.

More than half the Republicans in Congress failed to act to protect the certification of the 2020 certified presidential election results of the states.

Now we need to support and urge state legislators in states with the 75 more electoral votes needed, to enact the National Popular Vote bill to make every vote in every state matter and count equally, and guarantee the presidency to the candidate who wins the most popular votes in the country.

This drives me crazy.

Biden has an approval rating over 60%
The GOP Is shrinking - fewer people identify as GOP than at any time in our history
We impeached the MFWWNBN twice and threw him out soundly after one term
We’re passing some of the most popular legislation since the 30s.

We shouldn’t be afraid of the right. They should be afraid of us.

They may not be mutually exclusive, due to gerrymandering and stacked judgeships.

I don’t think anyone is questioning the legitimacy of the presidential election. I think that is all over with, we’re sitting here with the President today,” McCarthy said. “From that point of view, I don’t think that’s a problem.”

Lying liar says what?

If this were true, Qeven would be pushing for a decent investigation of 1/6.

No, i don’t think that more and more are believing it —- but i think those who are fighting to stay in power on the basis of it are systematically working to destroy voting rights and marginalize those who disagree. It was dirty tricks all the way until Hitler was solidly in power and where there was not belief there was fear.

Hitler was considered a buffoon by a significant portion of the citizenry but he was surrounded by and supported by power-hungry thugs, who were willing to pervert and break the rule of law. His cult of personality was not universal, but he and his thugs were able to terrorize elected and appointed officials to vote for measures that put him firmly in power and kept him there. The cult of personality developed and grew after he was already gaining power — up until then he was just a useful tool. People became “believers” through fear and intimidation, as well as social shunning.

We were lucky in that, thanks to people like Stacy Abrams, we were able avoid a second term (for now). But what is scary are things like what happened today, the censuring of the “impure” by state.-level GQPers, like DeSantis bragging in November how “perfect” the election in Florida was but yet driving legislative change to disenfranchise a significant number of FL residents.

If the GQP hadn’t solidified into a solid phalanx behind FatAss, I would say his unpopularity matters at the end. But the fact that they know he’s getting more unpopular and are still doing this shows that he’s just a convenient tool to bring along the jackboot class while the Stephen Millers, Steve Bannons and the other Twitler Youth destroy as much as they can at the state and local level to consolidate permanent power.

Kind of amounts to: Yeah he was but I don’t like it.

@lizzymom - yeah I agree and I hate what they are doing and I think it’s bad for our democracy and the country.

BriWi was musing last night: while “The Big Lie” is convenient short-hand for those that produce and consume [too much] media, it lets [the fuckers] off the hook by eliding the seriousness of the crime [or crimes plural].

We need something more accurate. Following the lack of success for Trump Steaks, Trump University, etc; Trump Sedition would be accurate, but (a) it invokes his name, which he likes and (b) the snowflakes would argue about the technical definition of sedition. So maybe: The Bankrupt Coup.

Heretic!!!

McCarthy is trying to have his cake and eat it too. It must be tough to be moving in such high circles when you are so obviously dumb. He makes Wile E. Coyote look like a chess playing computer.
