McCarthy Issues Trumpy Gripe Over Jan. 6 Panel’s Request To Social Media, Telecom Companies | Talking Points Memo

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Tuesday predictably took a Trumpian approach to complaining about the Jan. 6 committee’s requests to 35 social media, email, and telecommunications firms to preserve records that it believes are relevant to its probe into the deadly Capitol insurrection.

Glad there is a story on what McCarthy has to say…

Not like the president said anything today…

This is such good journalism I’m joining Prime AF

The pro-business Republican Party issuing threats against businesses—“We will not forget.” Gotcha, Kevin McCarthy. Thanks for the clarification.

Yeah, issuing an empty threat because you’re scared of exposure is pretty Trumpy all right. It never occurs to them to at least try to act like they might be actual public servants with a modicum of integrity who aren’t criming all the time. Never, never occurs to them.

If companies still choose to violate federal law,

Did McCarthy cite any particular federal law or is it only the natural law that says Republicans are above the law?

“Illegal” is the post-Trump way of saying you would prefer that a thing not be done.

TBH, for Daily Kos people to be lauding Biden in any way is somewhat extraordinary…

Um, Kevin? I know you may be hitting the crack pipe with Mike Lindell, so I’ll inform you of a little fact that may have slipped your amoeba-sized mind: the Democrats are in the majority now. They can do harm to the telecoms right now if they don’t comply with their requests. Who do you think they are going to be scared of: a theoretical GOP majority which wouldn’t even take power until January 2023, or some really pissed off Democrats who have power right now?

4chan…at least the committee means business…and I have no doubt the request being sent to 4chan has the GQPers fucking terrified.

Still…I expect this should be enough that the GQP will hold off the production of anything until they’ve taken over and can kill the committee in 2023. Run out the clock always works for them, and they’ve got a hand-picked partisan judiciary to help them.

Surely if TPM wrote of such events they’d be free to give a less glowing review.

And we could discuss the nuance.

But alas, we miss nonsense retweets disguised as stories Trump gave us so we instead get McCarthy FWDs of Trump tweets …

No one would belive the act.

At least being deplorable is on brand…

On some level, I have to feel sorry for Kevin McCarthy because he’s so damned dumb. Not much though…

IANAL, but this seems to be butting right up against obstruction of justice unless he can quote the relevant statute.
