McCarthy Downplays Trump’s Hush Money Payments: It Was ‘Personal Money,’ ‘Seven Years Ago’ - TPM – Talking Points Memo

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) tried to downplay the Manhattan DA’s case against former president Donald Trump, regarding hush money payments to a porn star he was allegedly involved with, on Tuesday as simply an investigation into what the former president did with his “personal money.”

On Tuesday, he seems to have worked out his spin. “I think you know in your heart of hearts that this is just political,” he said. “And I think that’s what the rest of the country thinks. And we’re kind of tired of that.”

He then added, “So, let’s move on to important topics like Hunter Biden’s laptop and maybe we’ll look at Benghazi again, because we never got the answers there that we wanted…we KNOW what the truth is…”

Kevvy?

It wasn’t “personal money,” you vacuous, flaccid choad. It was his company’s money. Rather than tap his own money pay Stormy to not tell the world about his weird, tiny member, he tapped that of his company so he could fraudulently turn a personal hush money payment that represented an unreported in-kind deduction into a deductible expense. To do this, he engaged in both structuring by means of an elaborate money laundering scheme, tax fraud and a felony violation of campaign finance laws.

Also from seven years ago. What did Kevin McCarthy do to hush Renee Ellmers?

People have had all sorts of names for the president who is all too culpable in throwing America into disarray. That being said, this candid video of a trash can being put into the back of a police van is simple yet elegant in addressing Trump.

If Mccarthy had said

“this is an alleged iffy tax deduction from 7 years ago, and maybe not worth the unprecedented action of indicating a former president”

It would be a defendable statement of defense for trump (it would be taking some liberties to be sure, but a much less laughable defense)

So Trump does know a thing or two, not as dumb as he has been described.

I think they’d have to use a smallish dumpster, something with four wheels at least. And then all they have to do is throw a chain around it, and drag it behind.

Negativity suits McCarthy very well…Except he is a zero. Should have taken 30 votes instead of 15.for Speakership

Seven years ago! He was just a youngster then! Just 69!

I am all in on Bragg and his Investigation. It has importance and it is being underrated. Once his indictment of Trump comes, the political landscape of this country will change dramatically.

The Right (as well as some others) is downplaying Bragg on many levels.

So, which excuse are we on now?

A different one, each and every day.

But this one is different.

This one appears to concede that it’s all true…

What a moron. A presidential candidate pays off a porn star to remain silent, and hides the payment. Are you kidding?

Um, is the statute of limitations period up?

Um, what if Clinton had paid off Monica Lewinsky? I’m sure that would have gone over just fine during Clinton’s impeachment!

" McCarthy Downplays Trump’s Hush Money Payments: It Was ‘Personal Money’…"

IANAL, but my understanding is that he used business funds for a personal expense – and a regulated campaign expenditure – then tried to cover it up.

It seems like criminal fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering are at issue here, not “personal money”.

But, of course, the entire GOP knows that, and are simply lying through their Trump-fellating teeth.

I’d like to remind the Squeaker of the House that he is not going to be sitting in judgment on the DFP; that will be left to a judge and jury. Now, please go away, you vacuous twit.

Yes, all true, but explaining that to Kevin McCarthy who moves his lips when he watches television is a waste of time.
